***OKIES in the BYC III ***

WOW all the pens now have 3/5/or 7 gallon waterers (except the a-frames) and it is making watering time ALOT shorter in the evenings!!! Of course I have to fill 85% of them first thing in the morning and that takes a bit longer than the old water bowls. But we had to fill those several times a day.

I still have 2 cuckoo marans girls broody, I took their eggs after they didn't hatch. But they have been swiping eggs as they are laid in that pen so I don't know what to do with them. I am about ready to give them some sexlink eggs I really don't want new chicks this time of year but these girls have been trying to set eggs for over a month now. Guess I should have given them some guinea eggs! LOL

Lynn thanks for the update on Perkins Sale. I really did hate to miss it esp. since I am missing Newcastle tonight. I will be gone the next two weekends so I will be having withdrawls from seeing all the BYC folks by time I get to another one, lol.

Everyone enjoy what is left of the weekend.

Was over 100 post behind. Been busy with garden & market.
Did I miss a good auction tonight? It's our 13 wedding anversary so DH & I took a road trip to texas. Worried about the birds in heat, but even if I was home I couldn't do much. DD lost 17 of her keets in the barn. Think they got overheated. She still has plenty left, but never lost a bunch like this. She was really upset. But on the bright side we still have LOTS of guineas!!!
Mitzi I was actually considering ordering some pullets the other day, but then I remembered we are busy enough. More chickens is not something we need right now.
Congratulations on your anniversary! Sorry to hear about the loss of the birds. This heat is nuts. I've never tried keeping birds and starting out in this kind of weather has definitely been trying. I only have four birds right now and of those only one is laying. The pullets are rocking along fine. They pant a bit but haven't had any problems. My layer on the other hand is struggling.

Every day that she lays an egg she looks horrible. She pants and makes awful noises but after she lays her egg she is up and doing better. We are headed out of town for a few days next weekend and I'm really worried that she won't make it until we get back. I have been putting 2 liter bottles of ice in a small tray of water as well as everything else I've done. I found my little EE laying in the water up against the ice bottle today. I thought that was funny.

I'm going to add to my flock but I'm thinking I want to wait until this heat breaks a bit so I don't have to worry so much about them.

LOL and here I am selling some of ours so I can buy more barred rock girls. But I don't want chicks I want to find some that are at least 3-4 months old. Hubby said if I empty the pen out at the garden I can buy about 8-10 more barred rocks. So far I have sold 19 and have a few more to sell but I would also like to sell my Golden Salmons before I add anymore to our flock.

Sorry to hear Taren lost all those keets, it is amazing as adults they are very hardy but as keets they are so hard to keep safe and healthy.

Hope you all had a great road trip, how was the market? I may have to buy okra, I still don't have mine in for fall. If I don't get it in tomorrow I am not even going to try. We eat ALOT of okra around here so I try to grow it ourselves. Last years production wasn't worth what we put into it and not having any this year I am out in the freezer.

Oh man, your daughter must have been way upset, I feel bad for her. I'd be devastated to have to pick up 17 tiny bodies & I know how much effort she puts into them. Mine have been doing good so far in the heat, as well as can be expected. But my elec bill was $500 this month, I guess from all the fans running for the birds, the 220 v well pump running all day long trying to keep the sprinklers going for the birds, the fans and AC inside. I also go out and rake up their mulch and soak it down every day in the afternoon for the ones without big yards. Trying to keep them cool takes up a big part of my day but it's so flippin' hot out. It never used to be like this in Oklahoma until last summer
I did get another 4x8 coop frame done today out in the heat. Figured I was already sweating so I might as well have something to show for it. I'll get it covered this week when it's supposed to 'only' be 100 degrees. I still want to make a few more of them, I like how they turn out using 6" wide pickets for the walls.
Oh yea-and pullets don't count, remember??
Happy Anniversary!!

evening guys- so far looks like no losses to heat- but geeze this is unreal! so i got a mister, put it out by the duck pool and everyone is hanging out there- i think it really does help, and they also have ice jugs to snuggle

on denagard- i am a believer! I think it may have saved a couple pullets, they were wheezing awful, and have had them isolated and on it for 3 days, they are pretty well over it now, another 2 days and they will be done with it- so i think its well worth the cost- they also have been getting oxine vaporizing every nite too

well, off to catch up the rest the posts i am behind- stay safe and cool!

Our electric bill was $400 and it was from our well kept shorting out. Hopefully got that fixed!

Market has went very well. We like selling in andarko, but Lawton is a much better market to move produce quickly. Was almost sold out by 10AM in Lawton today. Taron doesn't take loosing birds as hard as she use to but she has never lost this many so it was hard. We got home from market before noon & she went to make her rounds & found them dead. It was on Friday when the heat rose fast & hard.
Mitzi you must be doing more for your birds than I am-- our electric bill was only$400. But we do get a 20% discount for having our backup generator, so maybe we are almost equal.
Since we began life on the farm we rarely get away more than 24 hours since so much is required. Good to get away but DH has been working so hard he was knocked out asleep early. Us girls have been working hard too, but the stress level at the farm is much lower. Makes a huge difference.

Cathie the way feed prices are rising we dont want anymore birds! People think $3 dz is high for eggs, I see them going to $4 real soon. Ronnie if you are readin this you need to raise prices soon! Especially if you calcualate the cost to produce a dz eggs in the summer. People won't complain too much, sice they don't have too many other egg sources.
Corn & soy is so many things. Prices are going to start climbing in all areas very soon. Thankfully the goats & Guineas don't eat much. Those ducks are the ones who are going to do me in.y silver appleyards consume an unreal amount of food & water. I had the smallest plastic kiddie pool for them & they got to emptying the pool in less than 12 hours. I am wondering if holderread sent me geese on accident they seem to grow an inch everyday. I need to take some more pics of them.
Well may try to get some sleep. Everyone take care!

Up and down tonight...catching up on all the posts...leg cramps hit and I have to walk them out.

Sounds like there have been way too many losses due to this heat spell. I have one on Denegard and three on B12 and electrolites. All are doing better.

Our church has Saturday night services now. We tried it out...Did a bunch of canning Saturday...have pickles in brine that I'll turn into Sour Sweet whole gurkins, have a batch of Whole Koshers to make and then sweet pickle chips.

Need to mow in the morning too so guess I'll try heading back to bed.

Christina, glad to hear you are doing Lawton. Lots of rules and a long drive, but good money. I'm in Texas visiting. Got a later start down here yesterday so I drove by the market and it looked busy. Noticed the interesting scenery for the car wash as we drove by, too. Maybe the market should consider something like that to advertise.

We aren't getting enough eggs for the market right now. Our regular customers are buying us out before market day. Don't know how Ronnie does it. We have over 100 layers now and still not producing enough. We will be raising our prices soon and seriously considering $4. Feed is going to skyrocket. Also reconsidering our fall broiler project. We have already sold out of the 75 we ordered for August, and are going to wait and see what happens with feed before ordering more. Might have to raise our prices on those, too. Eggs are SO much easier.
