***OKIES in the BYC III ***

I use some large tin snips that look like giant scissors. I cut once to separate the pieces, then I go back again and cut off all those little fiddly bits. I hate those suckers.
I use basic side cutters, some people call them dykes. I use the long side of the cut area to help attach it to other wire if that's what it being attached to, just bend it around the wire with needle nose pliers, otherwise I cut it off.

Bill I hope you can get your heart rate under control soon.

After spending millions of dollars and trying everything under the sun to eradicate it the discovery was made that goats love Kudzu. If heavily grazed they will kill it off too.

For those that don't know Kudzu is known as the vine that ate the South. It was imported for erosion control and kinda got out of hand because it grows fast and the waxy coating on the leaves prevent it from being killed by herbacides.

The other day I was wondering about the deer. Some grasses are poisonous during times of drought like Johnson grass and the Sudan grasses, milo and corn too but yet deer graze on them and I haven't run across any carcases or heard of any from nitrate poisoning. Does it not bother them?
From what I've seen and read it's usually extended eating of the poisonous plants that usually effects them. I've seen goats eat milkweed and not show any effect on them.

Greybear... that's why they are called teenagers...The only things that matter is what they want to do. From what I've seen you post about your kids, you have done a fine job raising them

I must have have had some magic pullet dust added to the feed for those birds so far I've only decided on one for certain roo out of like 75 that I've still got I've got quite the surplus of pullets this year or so it seems, I had figured on half of them being male and sending most to freezer camp, I have plenty of roo's in other breeds so may take the young hens to sale before long I thought about going to Blanchard tomorrow evening but I had hic-up today and will be sticking close to the house for a few days under the advice of the ER Doc this evening he thinks I should limit my projects until I get my heart rate well under 170 I'm blaming it on that picture Mitzi LOL

Be careful. My sister's having heart surgery Monday for arrhythmia, she's only 49. Her heart rate gets up to 250 bpm. Her Dr had put a heart monitor on her that he was going to leave on for 30 days, it sends the readings back to him so he could evaluate. On Day 2 he called her and scheduled surgery, said he didn't need to see anymore. It sounds like the same thing you have, Bill, so be careful! Get to the Dr if you can. My sister is think, played sports all her life, never smoked or drank, nothing.

Well I drug the oldest out of bed(funny how he can get up at 5am when he wants to go lift weights but not when I have things to do!!!) Got him working on goat housing and water buckets, I made sausage, gravy, canned biscuits and buttered toast!!! Coffee is made, I have to vent, I am sorry folks but I am so tired of kids attitudes today!! They act like we owe them everything they want and they should not be asked or told to do anything they don't want to, if you bust their b--ts then everyone complains but nobody want to take them and deal with them, they just want to tell you how to do everything, they do listen, don't acknowledge you when you speak to them, they glare at you, talk back, mumble, half way do everything you send them to do!!!! DON'T GET ME WRONG!!! I DO LOVE MY KIDS!!!! Just not sure where I went wrong in raising them! And to top it of, when they go with or do stuff for other people they work hard, they are polite, they laugh and have fun!!!! Then people don't understand where I get upset with them, sometimes I think it is a secret plan to drive me crazy!!! Thank you all for letting me vent, if it offends some of you I apologize!!! Have a great day, stay out of the heat and take care, Lynn

Lynn, I have a son that turns 16 in a week, you're preaching to the choir here. My 2 oldest kids are in their 30's and went through the same thing. You didn't do anything at all wrong, it's the curse of teenage-dom. They turn into awesome really great adults but it takes til their 20. I always felt like I lost both my sons when they turned 14.

Quote: Thanks Les, It was down to around 95 when I left the ER I feel a lot better today, I got some meds that the pharmacist says might work too well, he said if it gets down to 50 to skip a dose I told him if it gets that low I can fix it faster by skipping rope,

I remember reading years ago that the southern states were running a program where they fenced in areas of kudzu and ran state owned sheep in small herds and that was killing it off real well until thieves discovered the untended herds and started stealing them by the truckloads,

Quote: My oldest daughter just had a surgery for that this last week and she's only 26 they went in at the leg and cauterized some areas to stop the arrhythmia it was a day surgery she was home before dark but when it comes to anything relater to ones ticker it's always serious, maybe mine was just sympathy symptoms LOL

Oh ho ho, I think you're probably venting for many people, Lynn. Our oldest son is now 18. He's a great kid, smart as a tack, going to OSU in two weeks, in the honors college, etc ... but getting him to DO anything around the house or yard is AAAUUUUGGGGHHHH!!!!! And getting him out of bed in the morning is even worse. We figure in a couple of weeks when he has to get himself out of bed to get to class on time he'll start to figure it all out. And let's not even start on my 15 year old daughter ... she came home from church camp yesterday and was helpful and polite and energetic all evening but this morning she's right back into La-la land. When I asked her why, she said "Well I'm just so comfortable at home, there's not any hurry and I know you love me so ..." I assume one day she will have children of her own who feel "comfortable" at home too. Lol.

Heading to the salt plains today to get water from the well. Not sure I really want to have to go after spending all day in the car yesterday, but it's got to be done so I guess we'll go. First I'm going to go let the girls out to graze for a while in the yard. We haven't got the new chicken yard finished after moving our driveway so they're in a yard half the size that they originally had and it's not big enough for both the chickens and turkeys. We think we're just going to build the turkeys their own house and yard. That will take care of so many other issues too.

Of course if the neighbors weren't blippity blip blips we wouldn't have had to do any of this. Sigh.

Oh my, MacGuyver, I would imagine you have way more experience with hardware cloth than most due to all your fun creations! i hate those fiddly bits and I have 1/2 track marks allover. I hate to think what those sharp edges would do to the chicks.

All suggstions are appreciated. I'm going to look around today and see if i can find some good cutters. I'm going to take in a scrap of hardware cloth with me to see if they really do work!

Stay cool fellow chicken fanatics!

Well I finally found an internet connection here in Florida. This hotel is nice but geeze they charge almost $16 a day for internet access and have no shuttles to anything around here. You would think for almost $200 a night they would give you internet! Hubby reports everything is going well at the house. Kurt my 15 year old is grudgingly keeping up with the birds (Lynn I feel your pain! LOL). Of course the 18 year old called to tattle that dad won't hand out gas money without him having to earn it (go figure the bank of mom and dad is tapped out, haha). Wish I could say I was having a blast in Orlando, FL at this conference but I am not. We have some free time in the evenings but no way to get there unless you want to take a cab and that is $24 one way to Downtown Disney. Tonight I am paying $15 for a shuttle to an "upscale shopping center" which to me says "over priced made in China stores". I am really hoping that it will be within walking distance to something else, lol. Then Sunday evening/afternoon I think I will break down and take a taxi to Downtown Disney. I don't like being stranded at this hotel. My coworker assured our travel people we didn't need a car while here but I didn't realize there is nothing within walking distance.

Hope everyone is doing okay. I have tried to at least read some of the byc on my phone. But my tap a talk isn't liking me so I can't post anything. I saw that it is going to be another scorcher this next week. That is the one thing about being here in Florida if you can stand the humidity the temps aren't to bad.

Mitzi I LOVE that picture you posted!!!!

Christina I am jelouse to hear of your garden. I got maybe 10# of tomatoes from my15 plants. They still look good and green now (well when I left I hope they are watering) but not producing anything. I hope they come back around and set more fruit. Our pear trees are just about stripped from the squirels. I am going to have to find someplace to pick apples and pears. We are almost out of the ones we picked 2 years ago. Our pear tree set lots of good fruit but the squirells keep taking them or knocking them off the tree. I fear there won't be anything left come time to pick.

Well gotta run for now I have to be back in a conference session soon. Yall stay cool!

Cathie, I'm so jealous! ALONE in a motel room with nothing around for miles?? Sounds like Heaven to me. Except for the fact I'd be worrying about the dogs, and the chickens, and the fish at home. I love the quiet anonymous feel of motels. You need a tablet PC or laptop with 3 G access for times like that. Our wifi is down AGAIN so I had to add data to my iPad once again.

Speaking of heart stuff...

Happy Death Day to me!!

9 years ago today, my heart stopped and I was clinically dead for an indeterminate amount of time while on a camping trip. It stopped twice more that day before I was stabilized. Every day since that has been a gift. Life is good.

Haven't gone camping since. :)
