***OKIES in the BYC III ***

They do have their vacines told DH we would vaccinate them again tonight. I prefer to have him hold while I shot, the kids are not strong enough to hold a bucking goat! Think it was 8 months ago when they were vaccinated last. They usually have free choice to baking soda. There was a small amount left in their pen this AM, it is full now. We made a paste & force fed it to the goats that didn't take it on their own. They prefer forage over any other feed (except maybe watermelon). They usually are only let out for a few hours at a time, but I know they can eat a BUNCH very quickly!
Carmel went down so fast. I don't think we could have done anything else. We are monitoring them & hoping for the best.

Without the sunshine they are looking anemic. The combs are not red...off their lay. Makes them look older. Would say 24 - 30 months of age. My Minorcas' combs lay over like that too. The comb base gets only so wide the weight of the height of comb lays over.

I have had a serious sinus infection since Saturday. Nose stopped up, draining, coughing, etc. When I woke up Saturday morning and let my dogs out, all I smelled was smoke in the air. I was probably breathing it in all night. Feel awful. Several people told me they have the same thing around the same time. That stuff is bad! I couldn't imagine having asthma at a time like that. It must be very difficult.

It's not only wood burning in those fires...synthetic materials, insulation, paints, lawn and pool chemicals, fuels, tires, etc. ....all offer up chemicals in the smoke...dangerous stuff to be breathing.

Thought i would share with my fellow Okies. I was surfing on CL and found these in the free section my flock consists of pullets and only 2 just started to lay eggs so this was a God send but check out these crates! We were able to make 9 nest boxes out of just one of these and i plan to use a few of them to build my Duck and Goose housing as well. Check it out!




Here was the incomplete pic i have to take one of the finished product but you get the idea. It holds three tiers of the plastic dish deals for 1.95 and walmart which are great nests and easy to clean.

I had dreams of letting my broody moms raise my chickie doos in the flock all together, but my dreams have been dashed by cruel reality. I have lost more of my chicks today. Gary is going to have to build me a broody pen w/ a covered run.

kass, it really is something you adjust, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't- my general rule is keep them in an enclosed area protected for a few weeks- and then try letting them in with the flock- each case will be different depending on flock dynamics....hugs!

These guys are a couple of months old, they are the ones I got at NEOCS. I let them run w/ the big chickens who basially ignore them and they keep dissapearing I'm assuming a hawk. I know there is at least one local hawk, he hunts near here, but he is small so I didn't worry much about him. I am pretty confident Oreo drew blood on him the day he got the young chick w/ the broody mom, Oreo was always there w/ the mom and chick and Gary found a broken hawk feather w/ blood on it. I thought they would be safer in w/ the big chickens, but they don't stay w/ the big chickens they go off by themselves. Until these young chicks I have not had any preditor problems (except my dog but I took care of that w/ an additional fence) We lock them in the coop at night and it is quite preditor proof, but this preditor is getting them in the day time.

yes- the young ones i have- teens - they do go off on jaunts by themselves without the main flock for protection- here is a thought- if you can , hang shiny pie pans from strings or cds around the perimeter- i did find that helped some- don't know that it is foolproof- it really is frustrating i know! lost almost all my water birds last year and about 6 hens till i got the dogs trained to leave them alone- i know that isn't always an option either

Good for Oreo. I'm so sorry you're losing them.
