Bill, that blows about the auction. I wouldn't be able to stand seeing some jerk mistreating them. It's got to be hard just seeing them up there as it is.

Well that rabbit got a good home with a cute little kid!
Newcastle is the one I've been to several times and that's where I've gotten some of my most favorite birds-like my big Faverolles boy that I love so much. I don't get birds from swaps and auctions anymore because I'm too afraid of bringing in some sickness my birds haven't been exposed to. But as far as auctions go, I like Newcastle a lot. They even have a table set up in the back (by the fan-haha) for the people on this list. They serve food and there were lots and lots of birds to choose from the times I was there. Plenty of seating and everyone is really nice.

The animals weren't in the cage when he was being rough with it they had pulled them out and sat them on the table, the water bowl had gotten spilled when the carrier was moved he was just making a big fuss about the water bowl but in this heat there is no way I wouldn't have had the water in the cage for them,

That is why I won't take anymore birds to that auction. My birds were in pairs and trios and one of the auctioneers (he wasn't the one auctioneering at the time) bid on my birds then only wanted to pull the hens out and run my roosters seperate. That is WHY I put the hens in there is to get more out of the roos, duh!! Then he treated the birds rough when I told him no to PO them if they weren't going to sell them as I had them. I think it is more WHO you are at that auction on how your stuff gets sold.

I agree on the kids running around. Our kids know they can go look at the birds but they know not to touch. Last time we went there were kids playing down by the lagoon. I guess those parents don't realize that kids are not "out of site, out of mind". Of course I worn my kids before we get out of the vehicle "there are enough people here that know me and they will tell me you are into something your not supposed to be before you even get back to me, so be good" LOL

I am looking forward to next week, probably won't take birds but looking forward to seeing the BYC'ers and possibly bringing home some "stuff" lol.

I haven't decided if I'm taking more birds next weekend yet kinda depends on the temp I'm surprised more people weren't at the sale yesterday since it was somewhat cooler that was the only reason I took birds I just can't do that to them when it's over 100 outside,

Any one ever deal with CedarCreekHatchery. I just ordered 10 Dark Brahma chicks from them, from reading on their site they don't set the eggs till they have orders for the chicks.

As for the Blanchard auction comments, I have to admit one of the guys running it works hard and I believe he does a great job. Too bad another one is running people away.

I can't remember for sure but I was thinking that Kass ordered from them and had an issue, but, I could be thinking of a different hatchery
I agree with you there one of them does his best to try and help and he gets overextended sometimes trying to make things work out for people,

Sounds like there are a lot of folks having a rough go of things. That would really stink to lose that many birds to dogs. Can't say I'd take that very well. That goat looks like it was giving that porcupine what for when it stuck her. At least it sounds like it wasn't too hard to get that cleaned up.

I'm envious of those of you with lots of birds. I have more room but right now only have four birds. Two australorps, one buff orpington and one EE. All but the EE are laying now and hopefully with the weather cooling off I'll be getting a few more eggs. I'm wanting to add another 2-4 birds but I've been waiting for the cooler weather so it would be easier on them. I kind of want a variety of birds to keep things interesting but haven't seen a lot of hens only (no roosters) or pullets for sale.

Those of you gardening, I have a question. I've never planted a fall garden and usually by now I would have pulled my tomato plants out and turned the soil. This year I still have my tomato plants in the ground and they are still alive, though not producing a lot. Should I go ahead and pull them or will they start producing more when it begins to cool off?

I have only pulled the tomatoes that were crispy. I left all the others. Some trim their plants to encourage new growth. I haven't trimmed mine since they still have fruit & I am even seeing blooms & a few new fruit developing! I vote leave them until the frost kills them if they are still alive. I usually pick tomatoes until thanksgiving if I keep them protected from the frost. IMO we should have 2 seasons to garden -- spring & fall. Gardening in the summer is miserable!!! But some reason we still do it every yr!!

Once we get below 90 during the day & about 70 at night your plants will produce happily again.

Edited because my phone changes my words to what it believes to be the word I want to use. So frustrating some times.

Jcatblum, that is kind of what I was hoping to hear. I'm trying to keep them watered well but at this point that is just to keep them alive. I have soaker hoses running under straw mulch and they are hanging in there but thats it. I trimmed back all of the brown dead leaves and I'm hoping for some new growth when the temps drop. I'll leave them where they are to see how it goes.

Les, sorry for the loss, it may be a good thing to set some live traps for dogs. Then have the owners pay for the birds lost, if the dogs cost them money they are more likely to keep the dogs confined, The short time I was animal control in Blanchard I threatened the owners of two dogs that were causing trouble in their neighborhoods for months, I threatened to fine the owners and all of a sudden the dogs that the people couldn't keep confined were confined.
Buster, I'm sure it's stress, all the hens i've bought quit laying for a few days, mine have always started laying again after about a week.

I think Bill's right-I'm pretty sure that's the hatchery Kass used and had such bad luck and poor customer service with. I'm going to check them out right now.
I look all the time on here and Ebay for Dark Brahma eggs. I just love my 4 Dark Brahma girls, they're getting so big. I'd love to have more girls.

There have been a lot of porcupine & dog incidents on the news lately. I wonder what's different about this year that's brought more of them out?!?

Lack of water, they normally stay near creeks or rivers, that is why they are rarely seen. As with the other critters they are seeking water.

Well if you are that envious I'm sure there are those here that can help you catch up. LOL

I searched high and low for one of my favorite birds that was AWOL, a blue bantam Asil hen, since I didn't find a carcass anywhere I held out hope and low and behold she came in to roost with her mate tonight. She makes pretty babies!

Yes I ordered from them several months ago. I ordered the blue NN's. It was not a pleasant experience in any way shape or form and I do not have one live chicken from my order of 15 chicks, didn't have one live one after 36ish hours of recieving them. I can't stress enough the NEED TO TAKE YOUR CAMERA W/ YOU AND IF ANY CHICKS ARE DEAD TAKE A PICTURE W/ THE POST OFFICE EMPLOYEE do not assume they will tell the truth when asked if the chicks were dead. Also I learned after the fact they (the post office) have some form they can fill out when chicks arrive dead, make sure they fill that out while you are there. Even w/ dated and time stamped pics if the chicks arrive dead it will be assumed you are trying to cheat them out of more chicks.
