Oh Kass, my Brinsea Eco20 holds 24 eggs (28 if you take the separators out). They're octagon shaped so if you didn't want to spend the extra $80 on a turner all you do is turn it 3 times a day, just whenever you walk by or think about it basically. I think the incubator itself was around $150 with shipping-jeez, I can't even remember. It's awesome though. It's really really hard to keep humidity up where it needs to be so make sure you get a good humidity sensor.

I was hoping for a kind that didn't need constant "putzing" What exactly is involved in making sure the humidity is where it needs to be???? Are we talking adding a little water several times a day, every day, couple of days .........

When we were running our Eco I think we added water every 3 days. It really is an easy incubator. Mines a few yr old now, it was $200 with the turner. If we hatch any duck eggs this yr I will prob order the optional humidity pump. It's pricey, but will make the unit 100% effortless.

WOW Joe and I thought I had alot of birds!!! I am going to show hubby your post just to shut him up! LOL I now know where to turn to when I get ready to replace my 15 year olds Porcelin Duccle he lost yesterday. Her pen mate is fine but that was just got less and less active until she died. We tried giving her vitamins and such but I think the weather was just to much for her. Post away on pics of the newbies I love seeing your birds!


Looks like we will miss Newcastle this week. I agreed to open the church for a birthday party for my great nephew who is 1 year old this Sat. thinking it would be a morning or early afternoon party. NOOOOO it is for 5pm, who does that? LOL So being the nice auntie I am I am going to miss my auction time. I am having withdrawls I tell you!!!

If anyone is looking for a good number of birds we have about 40-50 in the "sell pen". These are birds we have hatched and just can't use for breeding this next year. Otherwise I will finish raising them until fall and we will have to process them all, ugh (I really don't want to do that, can you tell?).

Spent yesterday putting in 2 new yards for the birds. My young cuckoo marans and RIRs loved their little yard but I wanted them to have something bigger so we got busy after church and put them a bigger yard in (I will now get by exercise when we put them up at night because they can run allll the way around the hoop house they are in! LOL). Then we put all the "sell birds" into a big pen and made them a yard that is 10' x 25' so they have plenty of grass and shade to play in until they find their forever homes. They loved it we even put in a fine mist sprinkler for them to run in and they spent all afternoon playing in the water.

Well off to work my first week back since my Florida trip I am looking forward to life getting back to 'normal' whatever that is.

I can't even begin to tell you all how upset I am right now. The neighbors dog got our chickens. A little background info for you: I live in the city and have a completely fenced yard. I have called the neighbor twice about this dog. My neighbors have chickens and she has never hurt them. I still don't want her around, I have a fence for a reason. I keep my dogs in the house when I let the girls out so of course I don't want someone elses dog in my yard while they are out (or any other time). The worst part is my 10 year old daughter is the one who discovered the dead ones. We were getting ready to leave for their dentist appointment and she was coming out with me to round the girls up. I saw the stupd @ss dog in the coop and started screaming at her to get out. There are feathers every where. We lost our favorite bird that we have brought in the house twice to recoop after she was attacked as a baby by the other chicks and once for heat exhaustion. My silkies took quite a beating and lost a lot of feathers but seem to be ok. I am SO MAD! I'm sure my neighbor is scared to death of me now. I called her screaming at her and she had her husband come home from work to help us locate our birds and clean up. He says he will put up an electric fence today and even offered to put her down. I don't want that, that's not fair to them. I wish they had listened the times I called. These aren't birds for eating, they are our pets, no different than a dog or cat. They were 14 weeks old and just starting to get pretty. Now we have to replace them and I don't want to get babies for fear of them being roo's, and older birds I worry that they haven't been hand raised and may not have the gentle personality that these girls had. I just want to cry.

My poor girls had to go off to the dentist bawling and worried about the birds we couldn't find. I had my eighteen year old drive them and I stayed here. Took nearly an hour to find three of them, they must have been up in trees because they would just appear out of nowhere. My husband came home and burried the birds for me. We told the neighbor the next time their dog is in our yard she'd get a bullet between her eyes. He said he understood and we had his permission to do so. I don't want to be at odds with my neighbors. Blagh!

Most are roos but I do have maybe 10 pullets in there, some golden salmon marans, some blue splash marans and some black australorps. I may even be willing to part with a few of my black star pullets but they are all under 14 weeks (none younger than 11 weeks) so it would be a while before they started laying. My splash marans hen lays pretty good but they don't start laying until at least 6 months and the black stars of course they are my egg laying machines.

Oh no the poor things! Your neighbor should at least pay for replacing the birds and not as chicks either. I wish I had some that were hand raised but the only ones I have that are that tame are my sons banty cochins and they are as tame as can be but not worth a whole lot if you are wanting eating eggs lol. If your neighbor doesn't offer to pay to replace them I would request it. That is the least they can do after being warned their dog was out in your yard.

My neighbor did offer to pay to replace them but I declined his offer. If anyone has any pullets that are tame and old enough to determine the sex that they are willing to sell please PM me. I'd like to have a frizzle, a barred rock, a silver laced polish and a jersey giant. I'm sure there are others I'd like to have, I just don't know much about the different breeds so I have to look up pictures on google once someone mentions them. I hear cochins are really nice and tame. Getting out to auctions is hard because my husband works until after 6 and works every Saturday. I'll go alone this weekend if I have to if I can find an auction not too far away.

OK. They sound a little young for our purposes right now. A little older and I could put them with my pullets.
