Jen, so sorry about your birds, but good news about your silkies. They may have escaped further injury and death because they are "no fun" to play with, as they just get still. Our dog used to get ours when she could, but we always found them almost completely uninjured, just a little stunned, needing only quiet and rest. She doesn't have the killer instinct, but rather wants to play with them. She now absolutely knows she must not bother the silkies. If only we could get her to undestand the same about the guinea fowl. They are very exciting to play with and will play catch and get away, catch and get away until they are worn down. Two that she played this game with did not survive. Now we have to put her in the barn or on a long chain when the guineas are out.

yes a work at a mill in westville i don't get a discount but i do get to coustom mix my own feed

but im shure my mix is diferant from your mix my mix is specialy forulated for keeping the birds in show condition as well as good prodution i have also been working on heathyer more vibrant chicks if the adults are getting all the nutrants they need the eggs will hatch better and the chicks will be heathyer

good mantanice mixes seem to have less proten and more energy
wile prodution mixes will have higher proten and less energy and fat

in the middle of trying to integrate some of the little groups to the main groups- big cochins to the layer flock, little mutt chicklets to the banty flock- be alot easier once thats done-

Erinszoo, do you mind if I ask what you made the raised beds from? Is it just pine? I need to build some new beds and I'm looking at alternatives. I really want to build a box about two feet wide by 30 feet long. Might have to break that up a bit but that is the area I want to cover. For my other beds I used some old 2X8's but I don't have nearly enough for the new bed I'm planning.

I have some tin from the roof of my old barn that I have thought about cutting into strips and reinforcing with 2X's or landscape timbers.

Seems like neighbors can certainly be a blessing or a curse. Even out in the country there are issues, they just seem to not be quite as intense when you are acres away from them vs. a few feet away.

SDS if you look @ the noble foundation site you can see there raised beds. They use old tires for some. Also use sheet metal with min framing for others.

yes, we just use pine. They are 2 x 6. We've used recycled stuff for our beds before but don't really have anything this time to use so we bought new lumber for it. We don't use treated wood as we don't want anything leaching into the garden bed. We usually have to replace the upright pieces about every three years or so as they rot but we put it together with screws so it's easy to fix. We just scoop the soil away from the corners and put in new uprights and rescrew it all together. The tin strip idea sounds like it would work great. We make our beds 3 x 10. It's shallow enough that we can reach all the way across them but not so long that we have to brace things in the middle. It's also an easy size to keep up with the soil needs. We built a bed 2 x 30 for an older woman that we know a few years ago. The only problem with it was that it bowed in the middle even after we braced it. We ended up having to take it apart and cut it in half and make two 15 foot beds.
