***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Will go back to catch up for the past two days when we get back from granddaughter's soccor game.

We lost a sweet uncle this past week and had the funeral Saturday. Saw family from all over the country that came in for the funeral. Wally was a wonderful father and uncle.

A coyote has been leaving deposits to mark territory around our pens...found evidence this morning...sure tell-tale sign is persimmon seeds in the droppings. Going on the offensive.

Nana, I mean permanently. I want to build them their own yard and not put the mama back into the layers yard. I'll have to place or caponize the boys but I'll deal with that when the time comes.
You know-like Christina's daughter does-"keep the family together" lol
Still should be okay/
Our leghorn chickens have now mastered the art of free ranging & bug catching. They seem to prefer the slow moving beetles over fast jumping grasshoppers. When we open the gate all but 3 run out into the pasture. Think that is pretty good considering they had never seen bugs or dirt a few months ago. They still pile up in dark corners, not sure if I will ever break that habit.
Poor guineas managed to enter an empty coop but not find their way out. Took 3 of us to get them out of the coop that had an open door the entire time.

Hope everyone had a great time at the auction!
I use floor roosts (flat boards about 24 inches long and about 4 inches off the ground for the girls to snuggle on. Place two or three close together where the girls roost and some will begin to use them out of necessity to pile on. Slowly begin to spread them out and put a couple of bricks under the roost boards to get them up off the floor. May take a few weeks, but you should get them used to the roosts and can begin raising them higher.

So, since today is a tiny bit warmer without all that rain (yet), I let my ducky have his first swim experience. I took a shallow bowl out to the bird's coop and the ducky just jumped right on in!
It was darn cute. He could still touch bottom, but he brought his legs up and made diving attempts.
:D

Well, even though my backyard and garden time is my favorite, I must go to work now. I'm shooting a soccer game for the college. Damp and muggy. Yay!

basically unless you are interested in showing they should be fine, hatchery birds are bred to lay eggs, first. Dominiques are awesome birds, can you post pics?

Thanks! I'm kind of interested in showing, but only as maybe a side hobby later. I was mainly interested in the eggs and entertainment. ;)
I have lots of photos, but I can't seem to post them from my phone.
Maybe tomorrow I'll post some photos from work. :)

chickens are awsome entertainment- the only reason i am getting breeder birds rather than hatchery is to be able to sell the fertile eggs- so i have a mixed banty flock, for fun, a layer flock for eggs, and my silkies and faverolles are my fertile eggs birds i hope some day....but when i first started in chickens i had no idea of 'show' birds, and i adore my seramas-

A few pics from today

A new color to bloom

Also a new color to bloom, this one looks bedraggled, but it was the only one blooming this color, so guess "beggers can't be choosers" lol

Sorry for the over exposed lights, trying to show all the diff colors together.

Poco these girls turned out so pretty

Gotta love the hoodas!!!!!!

Ari getting more colorful

Can't really tell from this pic, but this egg had a bloom on it making it look almost mauve w/ white speckles sprinkled all over

Nana I will try floor roost. We use pallets propped at an angle for our young birds often, they gradually make their way up to the top level. Imagine I can screw a 2x4 along the side of a couple saw horses-- my main coop has lots of lower roost-- but not the area where the leghorns are.

Mitzi I have been looking @ work out videos geared towards seniors. Seen a few on amazon for specific problem areas. Going to order a couple this wk I think-- had a good easy yoga DVD I was doing-- but I broke it trying to get I out of the case yesterday!

Happy to report speedy fast Internet with my booster!! Not sure about the calls yet-- on average a 30 min call was dropping at least 3 times before. Guess I will see in the up coming days.
