***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Happy Saturday! :) It`s a beautiful cool and clear morning here and it has the makings for a sweet day! I hope y`all get out there and enjoy it!

I have had a Red Pyle pullet in a cage in my shop for the last few daze for observation, she was acting a little strange and this morning when I went down to feed and water I found these, she had a busy night.....I figure she has ought to feel and act better now that has passed these.

Our egg count went up with the cooler weather, and the pullets began laying so we are donating the extra eggs to the senior center- they love it...

Brag time....LOL!!! I'be in the October/November issue of Backyard Poultry magazine? Pages 68 and 69! :) An article explaining how chickens are influencing my art! I haven't seen it yet, so i hope its a decent article...LOL!

yup, bators are really dangerous, i am afraid to set more, don't need more roos! BUT....bantam favorolles are calling my name......
Congratulations, that is awesome.

Dang, Elbert, twins! I'd have been been acting "a little strange" in her situation, too

Robin, I'm so going to buy one the day it comes out!! Did they tell you when that issue comes out? You must be so proud of yourself :))))))

I've got *4* of the sweetest little BBR Phoenix babies! There's still an egg in there, it's not pipped or anything but I'll leave it a few days. It was the one I almost took out and tossed because while the air sac & veins always looked good I never saw any actual movement like with the others. I left it in there just in case it'd hatch. I'll be perfectly thrilled with 4 though if that's all I get. I like small hatches because I can make them their own yard, they can stay together and most likely I can keep all of them....surely I won't get 3 out of 4 boys.....

My tiny sweet precious Serama has lost his crow today! He sounds like one of the babies learning to crow. He's molting like crazy and has those hard white pin feathers all over his body sticking out. Could something like that (not feeling well) cause it? He acts great otherwise-although obviously sore from the pointy feathers-but seems rather confused about the situation.

You're making me want to have a free range "pretty" flock!

Okay, guys. Give it to me straight up. Is there any reason to hope that if I sold a couple of mixed breed bantam roosters at auction or a swap meet that they'd end up anywhere good? I know there are far too many roosters born to imagine that they'll end up in "good pet homes". I know that. I have two little cockerels and I'm either going to fatten them up and eat them myself or sell them. My concern with selling them is that they'd just end up being dinner for someone else, or some worse fate. How realistic do you think I'm being? At least if I slaughter them and eat them myself, I know how they lived and died.

Is anyone else experiencing a severe decline in egg production from their chickens? I can't recall when I have had so few eggs from the hens in both coop areas. I switched to Purina All Flock raiser last week in the hope the higher protein level would increase egg production and got a few more eggs yesterday and today, but 5 eggs is only a few more than the one per day I got for about 10 days and a whole lot less than the 2-3 dozen I was getting in June.

Last year my entire flock of 40 layers quit laying for almost a month. They were in molt and I checked them closely. A few had feather mites so I took the opportunity to worm and delouse/bug the hen houses and pens. The temps were high too. Once everyone feathered up good, they began to lay again. Even better with the cooler temps. I don't like to use lights for extended laying unless it is a timer with two extra hours in the morning. Heat lamps in winter are red.

1 of the baby Phoenix's was out when I got back from Stillwater! He's adorable! How can I still be excited after hatching eggs since spring?? Here's his daddy, isn't he pretty? I love their long tails. This picture was from her auction ad so it's not real big. 1 out and 4 to go! I'd like to put in my request for 1 male and 4 females, please. Thank you.
Are there any hens in the picture? Pretty roo.
Congrats on your hatch. Some birds have a stripe thru their eye indicating a pullet...is it the same with these?

My Spangled OEGB roo does the same thing when he is molting.

Today is work in the garden weather.

I think you are right on the mark, I would think raising them yourself for your plate, you've already put half the work in, they likely won't sell for what you have in them, and there will be more peace of mind knowing they had good lives and one bad day.

Mixed breed I am not sure who would want them. Many roosters are just giving away. A pure breed roo might have a better chance as there are plenty of folks who find out their roo is infertile or they have a roo that dies, want different blood. My thinking is you might as well eat them yourself as you know what kinda life they are going to have. The odds for a boy to get his own flock of hens would kinda be like a human winning the lotto.

MacGuyver, that's exactly why I have a really hard time placing boys. If I knew they were going to have a great life with plenty to eat and drink right up until they were humanely killed I *might* have an easier time placing them even knowing they were going to be dinner. But to be realistic? That's probably not going to happen. They're going to be taken home and slung into a cage somewhere until they're snatched out a day or a week later and swung around by their necks. Scared. I've heard enough "good ole' boys" talking to know how that story ends.
If I had the heart to process my own I'd do so in a heartbeat because I know it would be done with compassion. I'm not one of those people that's capable of that, though, so be it. If, however, you are-that would be the kindest thing for the boys, to do it yourself. Sometimes you can find people (like here on the list) who want them for pets and happen to have room for just a few more boys. Maybe you'll get lucky and one of them will speak up.
Well that most certainly makes me feel better, thanks. I'm a blubbering fool when it comes to little Channing, I find it hard to imagine not having him around everyday.
