***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Kass, Ari is just beautiful, you know. I love his dark red and black patches, can't wait to see what he looks like when he's mature.
Christina, I'm so laughing at you for making fun of me hatching and now you're already talking about moving your incubators in lol!!
Smiths, you're learning fast!

The hard drive went out on my laptop today and I lost a ton of pictures and apps I'd downloaded. I've got 3/4 of the pictures stored on my google drive but it still sucks. I did find a 500 gb on Amazon for $70, that's pretty good. My husband doesn't even feel sorry for me! He says the 3 tablets, netbook and desktop computers should keep me busy til the new hard drive gets here

can you get an external drive enclosure and see if anything is salvagable?

We had that happen to us on a desktop and ever since, whenever I download onto the computer I also make a disk. I also no longer reuse my camera cards. When they are full, I put them in the case and store them in my grab-an-run bag. That way if we have a fire or tornado or something else happens, I still have my pics.

Anyone near the Arkansas/Oklahoma State line that is going to the Lucasville, OH show this weekend that wouldn't mind hauling a few chicks for me to be delivered?

Candled the eggs again today in a very dark room. 7 out of 8 duck eggs are growing, 6 out of 6 chicken eggs are growing, and at least 2 of the turkey eggs are growing. Still couldn't see in all of them. Strange, the duck egg shells are much harder and thicker than the turkey eggs and I can see through them perfectly. Why can't I see through the turkey eggs????

We added another four turkey eggs last night so I haven't candled them.

It will be fun if they hatch to see what we've got. The turkeys will be pure white holland because that's all we have but the chickens and ducks are mixed. We have an EE roo with white leghorn, production red, and barred rock girls in the chickens, and buff and swedish drakes with swedish and khaki ducks. I can't wait to see what they produce.

Gary got me a slave drive for all my pics just for that reason, no matter what happens to my drive all my pics are safely in the slave drive.

That's a good idea, too, except I'd have to buy a lot of SD cards.....I'll go see how much they are. Both my laptop & netbook both have card reader slots so it'd be really easy just to save stuff there. You guys have good ideas I hadn't even thought of!

Well got up to 4 more guineas hatched and the last 3 eggs were pipped and little babies looked to be struggling. I went ahead and helped them hatch the rest of the way and left them to see if they will make it. If they do that will be a 100% hatch with guineas no less, lol. Hope I can find homes for them all because I really don't want to raise this brood of them. I already have 3 in a grow out pen and 3 in an outside brooder from late Aug/Sept hatches. They sure are adorable though. I will have to set up one of the big brooders in the house because I only had a small rubbermaid tub set up for them because I really only expected a few to hatch. Hopefully the boys chicks will hatch this weekend as well. Those I don't mind because they are all bantams lol.

Okay after looking at mixing our own feed, in comparison to feed prices going up and planting winter plants the birds can eat and benefit from we have decided to plant a winter plot. Has anyone else tried this? What seed mix did you go with? I am looking into a Deer Plot mix that is clover, rye, wheat mix. We already do fermented grains but now that temps are cooler I haven't been feeding as much of this. I want to section off an area in each yard to plant in and then try to rotate the areas I plant each week so that I always have a new section to open to them weekly. I know this won't do alot for our feed bill but it can't hurt it either, lol. My biggest two pens of birds each have 1/4 acre of yard fenced off so I thought of fencing off a corner and planting in it for each of those pens and then when I open that corner fence the other off and plant it. If anyone has a grass mix they use that they like I would love to hear about it or tips on growing a plot.

This will be my first year also I stood at the seed pkt counter pouring over each bag of seed mix forever (at least that is what my husband thinks) trying to decide which one would be best I really wanted the perinnial bag, but thought it was to late to plant it, I am going to get that bag and have it ready to plant out earlier next year, but this year I went w/ the "tonnage" one it has basically rape, turnip greens, turnip, and dakon radish b/c I figured they would reseed and survive through most of the winter. I would really like to get a vetch/clover mix to add to it too.

Thanks! Where did you buy your mix? I am going to the feed store at lunch possibly and see what they have. But those old guys there think I am insane everytime I go in. They thought I was nuts when I bought reclaimed oats to ferment for chickens, and when I bought Ivomec pour on for mites they told me they didn't think my birds would survive if I used it on them. So I can only imagine the response when I go in looking for Deer Plot for Chickens. I will be the crazy chicken lady for sure then! LOL
