***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Need a little advice.. We will be transitioning to newer coop later this week. Hens have been using nest boxes to sleep in and I don't want that (obviously) in the new coop. Should I cover the nest boxes, say from 1hr before dark until daylight, until they get the hang of roosting? Thanks in advance..

Carrie, oaccasionally my ducklings would do that, i just figured they were clumsy, have you asked over on the duck thread?

Bridgett, that sounds like a good plan- how old are they? if they are still young, you could keep the nest boxes covered

McGuyver, if I don't have all my squares done on time for the crochet swap it is all your fault and I am throwing you under the bus on that thread!!!!!!!!!!!!

I so did not need to know about the ability to crochet Doctor Who dolls!

I'll take the blame. 'Specially if I can wrangle an Eighth Doctor plushie out of the deal somehow. :) He's dreamy.

So, does anybody know how to cook turnips and greens? I saw a nice bunch and wanted them at the store. Now I'm staring at them realizing I have no clue what to do with them. In my fantasy, I thought I'd blanch and saute the greens, roast the bulbs and serve them over the greens with a bit of butter, and serve it with a slice of Arky bacon. The getting from here to there though is kinda intimidating since I've heard if you don't cook 'em right, they're bitter. Anyone got a clue?

Sorry not much of a turnip eater and even less of a turnip green eater.
Your plan sounds like it would work though.

I need to write a cookbook titled something like Cookbook for people who like chickens more then eggs. But I don't think there are many of us out there. lol

I normally set the birds upon the roost for a few nights and then they usually start going their themselves.

We're on our way out to clean up under the pecan trees. Looks like it will be a good harvest this year even with the drought. We have 50 trees on the home place and many on the land in Prague. We need to rake limbs and mow under the trees so the harvester can come in later to shake and vacuum the pecans. The trees are all native but some are really good sized and great flavor. The green hulls are splitting and we are seeing some beginning to fall.

It is also hay cutting time. The rains have encouraged a growth spurt on the meadows so we should get about 20 more bales for the hay yard. Every little bit helps when you are feeding 100 head thru the winter.

Going out to check feed and water and let all three pens out to free range. The dogs are on guard duty.

Hope everyone has a great day.
This was the first year that our young tree (8 years) had a significant number of nuts. When the rain and wind knocked most of them out of the tree the other day the squirrels got all but three nuts!

I love boiled turnip green but roasted bulbs are even better. Drizzle olive oil and sprinkle chopped thyme and marjoram over them and roast them at 325 till tender, stirring occasionally. They are almost sweet. More vegetables are really good roasted.

This is almost exactly what I did. I boiled the greens, spritzed the diced bulbs with olive oil, tossed them with some whole garlic cloves, seasoned them with fresh ground black pepper and grated himalayan salt and roasted them. They really did taste sweet. It was super good.
