***OKIES in the BYC III ***

Just checking in. Still recovering from over doing it this weekend.
When we rearranged furniture we moved our desk into our room to leave room to set the office up for incubators. I have told Taron she will only be able to raise one batch of chicks at a time. I can't keep up with her having chicks every wk for her to keep for herself. If she wants to hatch some to sell at the local swap that is fine, but we can't hatch every wk for her to pick out the cutest! I don't have the energy this yr.
Think we are adding a hot wire to our goat pen. That crazy Bambi was out about 3am!! I open the front door & she was walkin to the barn with all 4 dogs. Called out, the dogs ran back. Got my shoes on - opened back up the door & Bambi was on the porch! Of course by the time I got her in the pen I had roosters up crowing & guineas shouting. She really makes things interesting around the farm.
Thankful the forecast seems calm this weekend. Kids NEED to go to fright fest, but it has rained every weekend.

Thank you Mitzi. The birds have finished their molt...looks like a feather pillow exploded here...over 100 chickens molting at the same time!
Jcat.....sounds like Bambi needs a buddy to keep her company since you lost one.

Crazy thing is she still has other pen mates! Think she just doesn't like them. She seems to prefer humans & dogs. The down side to a bottle raised goat.

HAHA this is our house right now! We were burning brush the other day and dh thought my hair must be on fire because he could smell like hair burning. NO it was feathers we raked up with the leaves!!! I can't wait until all my babies are pretty again. I have one Golden Salmon roo that looks terrible and my Black Australorp roo looks worse than that! (hubby says it is because he is living with 16 hens that would make anyone loose their feathers)

Kurt hatched out two little silkie chicks this weekend they are sooooo cute but this batch of chicks this last weekend are so noisy and just don't seem to be as thrifty as the chicks we usually hatch out. I may put some vitamins in their water to see if that helps.

Elbert what is the secret to being caught up on chicken chores??? I spend Fridays sanitizing feeders and waterers, getting kids to put fresh hay in pens and clean out the nesting boxes, then Sat. there seems to be just as much work as on Friday lol.

Nana should this CW pair I got at poops be laying yet? I have yet to see one egg from her but wondering if she is finding a way to hide them.

We eat Fried Turnips (just like Fried Potatos) or I will boil them with my potatos and mash them up in the mashed potatos gives them a sweeter taste.

Have a good Wednesday all!

:) Well I don`t have very many birds and the ones I do have are small.....I clean my pens daily so it`s a easy and quick job. The other chores is just property maintenance that needs to be done before Winter sets in.

Morning all,

Kathy,
that is very funny! I've got alot of "molters" too; 4 roosters. Plus, nobody is laying now. We had a little talk but I think hens are more stuborn than I am. That is really stuborn! ( I prefer the word "determined") DH says I get a certain look in my eye and he he has learned to not even try to object. That how he knew we were going to have s lot of chickens.
I am going to meet Rebecca (muesky) at Maud auction tomorrow night. That is were I found my Mottle pair that I just love. Never know what you will find there but chickens are sold last and it can go really late.

Quote: Kathy, It's possible. If she is molting, she won't be laying yet. Out of a pen of 12 CW, Blue and Black Wyandottes I'm getting 2 eggs a day because they just finished molt. They slow down a little with the colder weather. My pullets started laying at 7.5 months.

Give Rebecca a big "Hey" for me. Hope you find what you are looking for at the auction.

Moved four chicken eggs to a different bator for lock down. Two have pipped although one of them got a break in the shell over the air sack during the move. He's still moving so we hope it makes it. The other two are still moving but haven't pipped. Otherwise we still have 8 of 8 duck eggs alive and well and are starting a new set of chicken eggs. Still no turkey eggs fertile. We're determined to get this bator thing down ...

Here are some pics of my LaFletche trio. They are still young and growing. They are very different than my Cochins; flighty when I go in the pen but very calm and quiet on their own. Their feathers are exceptionally soft and shinny.
