Got me a nook HD+ to keep me entertained at the hospital, nice to have a new toy to keep my mid off things.
Mitzi I understand all too well you comment on testing & Drs. The dr now even said today they let this to way to long. My primary doctor submits the referal & then I am at the mercy of my insurance to find someone to take me. She has done her best, went to order her an edible arrangement & DH thinks I am crazy!!! If she hadn't kept trying I wouldn't be having this procedure-- I am so thankful she has done all she could. Thanks for letting me vent. Trying my best not to talk about things around the kids until we know a specific diagnosis & treatment plan.

Christina OMG. I've always been so envious and in awe of how much you did and the endless amounts of energy you always seemed to have. I'm not very good at saying all those politically correct things we're 'supposed' to say so I'm just going to say what *I think. And *I think it sucks and it's NOT fair. It's not fair that someone with 2 young girls, animals, a husband (and countless others who depend on you) to have to deal with something like this on top of everything else. I always hear people say that God doesn't give us more than we can handle. I don't believe that to be true. For those of you who are religious, I think He does his best to be fair but sometimes things slip through the cracks even when you're God. And Christina, I truly believe He'll notice the slip-up and make things right. Because you're a good person who does her best and goes above and beyond in the way you raise your kids and live your life. I know bad things happen to good people, but not this time.

The birds that I relocated to the laying flock apparently don't feel loved by their new group. They are roosting on the metal roof of the chicken coop. I guess if they are sitting on their feet while they roost, their feet won't stick to the cold metal when it freezes. The coop is elevated about 18 inches above the ground, so the roof is really high compared to me standing on the ground. I don't think I will be able to catch them anytime soon.

That's why it breaks my heart to split birds up :-/ I only do it now if I have no other choice, like if there's too many boys in the group.
You could buy some of that spray on bed liner and spray in on the metal where they roost at, that way you wouldn't worry about them freezing their feet to the metal. Course it would involve a ladder but you'd only have to do it once,

Is that a brown duck egg? What kind of ducks do you have? I'm assuming the banty one is the smallest ..

She is a muskovy. She is the only thing I have in my backyard where the egg was laid. All my chickens are in coops. I am super new to ducks. Is this an unusual color for a duck egg or not a duck egg at all??

I've only ever seen white or off-white eggs out of my muscovys  , put it in the incubator and see what comes out of the mystery egg LOL
[/quote

That was my thought too. I've never seen anything but off-white/white eggs from commercial ducks. I know there's a few wild ducks who have brownish eggs but ... maybe your muscovey has some wild genes???

I raised chocolate and lavender muscovies, and my eggs were a creamy, off-white color. I'm not sure what that is. it's sure big, whatever it is.

Oh my goodness. That sounds terribly scary. I really hope they can fix the problem. We will be praying for you and your family.

"Saw the news Norman city Council agreed to allow chickens maximum 4 hens no roosters must have coop water and food. Those that objective were worried about disease and the smell-- guess they want to get rid of all the wild birds in Oklahoma too?"

Glad they're going to allow some chickens.

Nana is your hen still rasing her adopted chick? I would offer 2 girls to help collect pecans but they're pretty busy on our farm lately. Try to make some pecan butter if you get a chance. I buy it at least once a month for $16 for a 12 oz jar (I buy I at whole foods or sprouts) No one else in my house likes pecans but for me they are as yummy as chocolate.
Erin I think you showed great restraint when someone showed up on your property my shotgun would've came out from behind the door if some random guy was at our place--- maybe it was a visitor from your crazy neighbors.
Buster if you can train your hens to lay an egg a day 365 days a year you might be able to make money selling Eggs. I am glad you will have the mobile processing unit so you can share your skills with others close by and convert them to farm raised chickens
Anyone heard from Cathie this week she may have posted and I missed it just wondering

Robin forgot to add. Pics of babies with their care takers are always my favorites!!
I am here our home internet is down. It is dial up so the road grader probably go it this last week when they did the roads, grrrr. I took 5 days off work (well only 1 day of leave the rest were either holiday or I already am off those days lol). I loved it! But was really ready to be back at work today! LOL

Christina if there is anything we can do to help let us know. We will be keeping you in our prayers during all this. You are a strong woman and you have some great kids and hubby. I am sure you will feel alot better once all the surgeries are over with and behind you.

Had a super yummy totally local supper tonight. We ate one of our 24 week old Dominique cockerels. Since he was fully mature, I slaughtered him Monday and let him dry age in the fridge for 48 hours. Then today I quartered the bird and browned the breast and leg quarters in some rendered chicken fat in a cast iron skillet. I diced some turnips and put them in a Corningware dish, poured wine and chicken stock over them, then put the browned quarters on top. I deglazed the pan with more chicken stock, reduced it to a nice sauce, poured it over the quarters and salted and peppered them. I put them in the oven for two hours at 250 degrees. I washed and chopped the greens, and put them aside. Closer to dinner time, I minced a slice of bacon, chopped an onion, and threw both of them in the skillet to saute. When the onions were translucent I threw in the greens and poured chicken stock over them. I cooked them till tender, then served each quarter with a helping of diced turnips topped with the sauteed greens. It was awesome. Now I have the frame, feet, and leftover bones with the pan drippings in the stockpot cooking down.
