Hi everyone in okieland.

I am new to the board and just getting back into chickens after a looong time. Had them when I was a kid and I am loving having them again. I only planned on getting 6-10 but I am addicted already with 20. I have Buff Orpingtons, Cuckoo Marans, Black Australorps, and Barred Rocks(was told by the lady in atwoods they were BA). Trying to decide what breed to get next. What do you think?

Welcome ladyokie! Sounds like you need some brown & specks in your colorful flock! My vote is for you to get Speckled Sussex. Get a SS rooster to go along with your hens. Then I vote for you and me to be good friends, and for you to have lots of little baby SS chicks hatch out - all pullets, and too many for you to keep. You'll ask me, your good friend, if I would like to take some off your hands, and since it will be next spring by then, I will say "of course, dear ladyokie, I'll be happy to take some of your beautiful Speckled Sussex peeps!

Or if you want some darker red and don't feel comfortable being my best friend just yet because I come on too strong and am just plain weird, get Rhode Island Reds or some Red Sex Links - awesome layers!

You all know those bags that people put their dogs in... I want one to put one of my polish hens in and carry around with me everywhere. Went down turnpike after NPIP with two polish hens in backseat(in cage) attendant asked if I took my chickens everywhere, I said if I could I would take these girls everywhere.

Sounds like you are in the right place if you started out wanting 10 chicks and are up to 20!

Disclaimer: this group is comprised of many who have serious addictions to poultry auctions, hatching eggs, chickens, turkeys, quail, guineas, and peafowl. Most are enablers and if you want more than 20 chickens, we will be only too happy to help you find them.

Have you seen the movie "The Natural History of the Chicken?" It was on OETA last week, but I have checked it out from the library before. In it, there is a lady who has a white silkie hen that she takes everywhere with her, in a large handbag. She washes and dries it, put it on a floatie in the pool with her, takes it to the grocery store.... now, that is funny! Here is a picture of the outside cover of the video
