Morning all! Another hot day in store for us!

Stay safe and stay cool!

Andi, you can read back a few pages to see what everyone is doing on keeping them healthy and cool as can be. Good to have you back.

good to see you jarvis! Hope everything is going well. I am so jealous that everyone gets to see each other!

I was waiting for my sister to get around to doing some things after loosing her father in law, I had planned to help her but I don't think they are going to be in any hurry so I am not sure! With this heat I don't know if I want to do anything that doesn't involve water! LOL.

I have three LF Cochins that are doing fine and one of those sits in a nest box all day trying to hatch chicks out of thin air.

They're in near complete shade with other breeds, an open sided coop with a large run attached.

I had one do that this morning. Then he took off into the woods. I wished him luck, 'cause I wasn't gonna chase after his little a$$.

I was gone most of the day yesterday to a nieces and nephews b-day party. I come home to an entire pen of birds dead!

All of my Cuckoo Marans and White Rocks, a Silkie, and a OEGB - nine birds total. They were just over 2 months old.

Their pen was one I had just given them a day before, and it didn't have a top over it yet... and they were in full sun!

Andrea,

I have my chick pens and brooders in an area that has complete shade all day, with plenty of ventilation. I make sure they have plenty of water as well. So far, it's worked for me. I may resort to hanging bottles of frozen water in the brooders if it gets much hotter. My outside brooders have wire bottoms and are about 4ft off the ground. The chick pens are wire on all sides, with roosts, and tin on top.

Condolences to those of you who have lost birds to the heat. I've been really lucky this year. My biggest run in next to the barn, so it gets shade around 11 o'clock.

I've put ice cubes into the waterers, and the chickens seem to like them. I put a few on the grass where there's shade. Before I'd finished dropping all the cubes, one of the pullets sat on one as if it were an egg. I expected her to squak and stand up, but she just settled down on the ice and dozed off.

Sorry to hear about people losing birds. I have had it happen before also but not this year at least so far.
I did have a stupid Marans hen kill three of her chicks. I wanted to wring her neck but then I would have had to process her in the heat and it wasn't worth it. I should just sell her and take the money and go to KFC.

Hi all, so far so good no loss of birds but I did change water out 3 times yesterday. My plan today is go to town and buy bottled water, freeze it then put it inside the waters. Like ice in your glass.

I have every extra tarp, blankets, dura rock on all the pens and move it to make sure all the birds that are penned up have shade. Oh gosh its just June..............cant wait for august. Swimming pool here we come.

Come on Carah................I have water in the pool at moms. Sit out in the shade in the morning and drink some coffee then afternoon at the pool then evening at the grill.....................what ya think????
