Hey all - I hope there is someone on here who can give me their opinion on what to do next.

I just caught a baby raccoon in my garden - all my clucks are out free-ranging and this little guy is trying to climb my fence. I now have him in a cat carrier. I don't want him or his buddies, siblings, parents around. Should I let my JRT have him? I am about a half-mile from downtown - so I don't think shooting him is really an option...plus I don't know if I could do it.

Thoughts? (can't drive him to you to take care of for me, Henny...dang it.) I wish he wasn't so dang cute.

Hey Chuck - I've seen a big one around the neighborhood, so I know they're here. I held the carrier open on it as it clutched to a post of my privacy fence, then knocked its little hand-paws off the fence until it fell into the carrier.

OK so what is the deal!!!!!! seems like every post I read there are these little yellow guy's jumping all over the place. So did they have a half off smiley face sale or something.

What the heck ya gonna do without any A/C, awe I forgot your a tough gal, be carefull with that coon you hear, just leave it in the carrier outside in the sun by the time you get home from work you can put him in a hefty sack for friday pick-up.

I let Titus the JRT do the dirty work - a few very fast powerful shakes - no blood, no torn fur, no crying out, over in a second. I feel bad about it, but I think I did the best thing for my chickens and my garden. I hope I don't find any more.

Thanks for the thought Al - lucky me I live in a 100 year-old money pit with an AC upstairs and one down - the upstairs AC is what conked out, so I'm making a bed downstairs on the sofa for the next few days. My AC guy is a firefighter and he's busy until Monday. DBF Jack is an electrician and is pretty handy with this kind of stuff - he'll come over tomorrow and see if he can figure it out.

Hey, Al, here are those fish from my pond I was telling you about. They certainly tasted good last night...

This is my great nephew. He caught these over a period of about half an hour to 45 minutes. My great niece wanted to show off her catch, too.

Your JRT would kill him but the little boogers can deliver some nasty bites and some do have rabies. I wouldn't chance it with my JRT.
Besides that, what is another gunshot in Tulsa? Its like little Detroit over there.

Haul him out by the river and let him go.

Take him to Denny's and drop him in the dumpster. He will feel right at home.

Yep, a Jack Russell Terrier is hard to beat as a varmint dog. Mine learns fast, too - he knows that cats and chickens are not varmints, but anything else is fair game. He is a master squirrel killer - this winter one fellow had me keep and freeze all the squirrels Titus killed - he doesn't mar the skin, tear the pelt or chew on them - they look like they just fell over and died.

Hi Monty - he's up on his shots, and this one didn't have a chance to bite. I wouldn't let Titus after a full-grown coon, though - those things are big and strong. A couple of years ago Titus got nipped by a grown possum he killed in my garage before I could call him off. I called the vet, and he said as long as the dog's shots are current he should be okay (ruling out infections, etc.).
