Rush springs grows some fantasmo mellons I have a huge black diamond in the fridge now from the festival last month Yummmmoooo. Nope the samich was cheese, mayo, ham, turkey, salami,on three slices of turano ciabata bread. the way I tell if my mellons are ready is not by size but by the yellow spot on the bottom, it has to be getting really yellow, then a firm squeeze tells me if it is ripe, and then I put the ole nose to it and give it a good sniff, if it is ripe you can smell the cantelope smell. A good tip is when they are within a few days of ripening up withold all water from the for about four day's or so, this will make them sweeter and ripen up just fine.

Thanks Al! I will definitely check the bottom of the melon and give it the sniff test. Your sandwich sounds great - and I did have some Butterfinger ice cream in the freezer...wish I could plant a butterfinger bush in my garden.

well, this is their first nite outside, they are in a run and coop, inside the big run and coop for my big ones, so they are pretty protected, the big run has cement around the fence line, so i hope nothing sneaks in- their run is covered with hardware cloth- they are 2 months old...

Have your keets started making the guinea sound yet? My folks have a few guineas and I just can't get used to that sound they make - it's like something electronic and alien - very weird - there's nothing else like it! My folks can't get their guineas to go in at night - they roost on the top of the chicken run.

Hey all. Looks like storms here in about an hour. The chickens are gonna have to fend for themselves tonight.
Beth, what project do you have going on.
A documentery on the elusive Mississippi Kites? How about how to tell if a melon is ripe. Heck Al could be a star.

my buddy john has about 40 guineas an they were all raised in the coop with the chickens an roosted with them until he turned them out an from then on they hit the trees.he has some bighedge trees an they stay pretty protected in there they are loaded with thorns.i had about 50 of them around 3 months old an a guy came an got everyone of them a few weeks ago.kinda quiet out in the chicken yard now.

I am ready to cast Al in a leading role if he'll agree to wear a big floppy straw hat and overalls and lean on a hoe in a garden...barefoot, and with a long piece of bermuda grass in his mouth. He'll have to be very, very still - and he can only move if a bird or other critter comes near...

I'm getting ready for a week-long dealer sales training meeting at a large manufacturing plant - will happen early August. It's keeping me busy.

yep they do alot of committee meetings to make decisions- they remind me of the tuna in the Nemo movie, its like they move in sync. These are still babies, am hoping they will get along with the chickens, and talk about a set of lungs~ pick one up and he squeals so loud! but they will come to me for treats, just don't touch..

Good night Alski!

I miss Stimpy, too - was thinking of him tonight - hope he and Lou are doing okay.

Yep, bigokie - that's what my folks' guineas did - once they were out they lost any interest in coming inside.

Great pictures Robin - I guess they're at the scruffy teenage stage - are they going to be the speckledy color? At least they're still kind of cute - their heads are at least still proportional to the rest of them!
