I've never seen them roll, but the guy I bought them from, said they had skills. I haven't had the nerve to turn them loose, because I've never had any, and I don't want them to fly away, and never come back:idunno

Yesterday evening we had torrential rains that we driven by 70mph winds and the only dry birds on the place were the chicks with mom. I'm sure they rode out the storm tucked under a wing, safe and sound as usual.

I have even had birds run off and brood in the winter time when there was snow on the ground. Raised every chick with little help from us.

I agree - moms w/chicks are the easiest chicks to raise. No worry about whether the chicks are warm enough or too hot. Mama hen teaches them how to get on the roost so they don't roost on the ground - piled on top of each other. The only chicks I have lost when they had a mama hen raising them are those that had access to both a shallow water jug and the deeper pans that are used by the older birds. A few young chicks have tried to drink from the 4 inch deep pans and fallen in and drowned. Whenever possible, I keep the mama hen and her chicks segregated from the older birds until the chicks are about 4 weeks old. That way, they only have access to the more shallow waterer and I can feed the chicks and mama the baby chick starter instead of the lay pellets the rest of the flock is usually getting.

NNbreeder - ya'll have been consistently hit with some of the wettest and windiest parts of the storms passing through Oklahoma this year. I thought about you when I was checking radar yesterday evening to see if OKC might get some rain.

Tell you friend not to worry, with medical science these days Im sure it will be ok. Kidneys are a very resiliant part of the body and dialysis isnt near as bad as it use to be. My dad lost both of his kidneys to cancer in the late 80's and was on dialysis for 5 years until he came down with cancer in the lungs. At that time he was the first patient to ever have no kidneys. If he survived for 5 years on dialysis without kidneys and could have been longer, I'm sure with science today you can live a long full life.

Good morning all! I hope it is a nice day out today, I have alot of things I want to do outside. Couldnt sleep last night so I was up cleaning and watching chicks hatch until about 1 am. I might be a little tired this morning but the bright side is I can see the floors in my house again...lol. Husband and kids had taken over for a while.

hello all....
Looks like we do not have a mountain lion so says the animal countrol but they do not know what it is... They said the have photos that say what it isnt but they are not good enough to say what it is... Should I be afraid ?
Side note I would so LOVE a used bator ... Nothing fancy....

I wouldnt stand around and take photos if I saw it Im more a runner....;o)
We called animal wild life folks and thats what they told us...This "cat" took big mama during the day near the house so I was afraid but Im not now... Just wanna protect my stuff.....

Did you guys get that HEAVY RAIN yesterday... I did in Edmond.. Hard heavy rain but it never made it to the house in jones... Funny how Oklahoma storms are...

OK..Rain Hogs....send it this way....Again we just keep missing it.

Cammie the sooners are in deep weeds losing the QB....Gonna be a rough year for them. A friend of mine used to teach out that way in Amber/Casset is it? Something like that...she taught music. Chicasha had a lineman job opening recently... they pay pretty well.. Mike is looking on the net for jobs. He got this hair about one near Syracuse NY...we had a throw down about that!.....NOT going to NY!

Delaware...I would be interested in a couple hennies... I think I might sell my Hova-Bator. I hate all the roos.... Would rather just order through the mail and let my broodies hatch mutts. No more strsight run either....

Teach how many hens did ya get outta that batch I gave you...I had 11 too...3 hens, 8 roos....

Dirty birds. Also did you get more self blues. I only got like 5 and was supposed to have an even split... hope you got the blues....

Put my Wheaton Ameraucanas in the coop yesterday.... One of them took on a full sized hen that came to inspect them. I think she is babysitting them? She hovers nearby and runs off more aggresive hens. Also my big red roo Rex, taking care of them too. That is just the cutest thing. He clucks softly and shows them food.

This is going to be a long post so I am going to tell my Rex story anyways. Maybe you men can take a page out of Rex's book! The other day when I was cleaning out my coop (

Al) one of my BBS orp hens had dug a little hole for herself outside the coop door and was just kicking back in it. Rex came up and folded himself up next to her. She chatted on and on for like an hour to him about who knows what.....and he just sat there and listened to her. Once in awhile he would offer a cluck or two....at least he was LISTENING!!! HE VALIDATED HER FEELINGS!!!!! LOL...Psycho-Babble for chickens!!

I really think my snarkies was stress and overcrowding. Once I got rid of those nasty roos....everything calmed down and everyone seems much better. I only medicated the ones who had rales. Like 3 including the one I killed accidently.... They have joined into one big flock now...less separation and grousing at each other. All those roos....*sigh* no more roos. I kept my big barred rock to split the job with Rex....that's it for me.

Beth don't listen to them....the microwave is the best invention since the wheel. If their wives were to pack up and leave, Al is the only one who wouldn't be eating out of a can or grilling weenies.

I am getting POOPS fever...... Do not let me get any chicks!!! Hens only!!!!!

Does any one else think whatever is plaguing Bethinoklahoma is a Big Foot?

I am not Beth but,
I am not sure by your description but the two hens in Beth's pic that are closest to the pen are a Buff Orpington and a Brown Leghorn.
Does your Buff hen have white ears? If so then she is probably either a Buff Leghorn or Buff Minorca.
How do you mean she looks like the dark one but is buff like the other?

Monty is correct - Buff Orpington and Brown Leghorn. Leghorns and Minorcas are both built slimmer than Orpingtons and are more flighty than Orpingtons, if that helps any.

Mornin' everyone!
