One of the good things about Oklahoma weather is that in December, it is just as likely to be dry and in the 40-50s as it is to be wet and freezing.

You are right, never know if its gonna be 60 or zero,
But the last two years we have had ice during the Shawnee show. Two years ago it was cut to one day and that was the big icy blast that knocked all of us here out of power.

I don't think "baiting" works to attract deer if the persimmons are not native to the area. But wait, maybe that is only fish who are smart enough to recognize non-native bait and avoid it. I seem to recall seeing "deer corn" available at the feed store and I don't think corn is native to most wooded areas.

No, our persimmon trees are on 20 acres next to a bunch of lake homes and I don't think it would be safe to shoot the deer under them with anything other than an arrow. My youngest son has been wanting to shoot them for years, but he needs to find somewhere further away from populated houses to hunt.

I took the hunter safety course with him when he was 10 years old and definately remember that you need to have a large safe zone around the deer. I also remember that he got at 96 on the hunter safety course and I only got a 94. I may never live that one down.

Edited to clarify that my son wants to shoot the deer, not the persimmon trees.

Who donated the 100 quail eggs to the POOPS auction? I need to move them to the hatcher (I didn't get them set in the incubator until the middle of the week after the auction). I intend to keep them in the house in a box after they hatch rather than put them in the big brooder this time.

I think that I used to have better luck with my low tech boxes and heat lamps in the house and shed, than I have had in past years using "real" brooders. When I first started hatching eggs many years ago, I kept the birds in appliance boxes with screens over the top. I would buy the screens at the Habitat for Humanity recycle store for a few dollars. They usually had wooden or real metal frames (as opposed to aluminum frames) and were very sturdy. By using several inches of pine shavings, I could reuse the boxes over and over.

Since everyone did so well on the last one, here's another code for everyone to break:

Monty, trying to top the Chipendale dancers gives me the shudders, wondering what to expect. Sort of like my grandson's announcement and shudder yesterday when he told me he was "so freaked out" because he had seen a snake.

Maybe the Chipendales could be puppets?
