nnbreeder, thanks for reminding us of the Pigeon show in Shawnee, maybe this year I will actually remember to treck across the building this year and see those "other" birds

Ok I'm looking for some input. I have had the normal egg layers and all but I am wanting a new breed. Something that free ranges well, fairly cold hardy. I have been leaning towards maybe polish or some top hat breed, just something new. Anyone have any ideas.

Thanks, for the info, I have my Coop in with my donkeys so generally I do not have any predator problems, knock on wood, as of yet i have never lost a bird. Normally I just close them in the coop at night and so far they have been fine.

You might try rose-combed brown leghorns and Saipan Jungle Fowl. My Saipans were wheaten colored, very thrifty, independent and very alert to predators and great mothers of their chicks. The rose-combed brown leghorns are also good at free-ranging. The rose comb wasn't susceptible to freezing and their brown color made them less visible to predators - both during the day and at night. Avoid having just a few chickens that are a starkly different color than the rest of your flock when free-ranging - the hawks choose them first.

I hate to gunk up the board, but I'm a proud mother and want to post pictures of my chicks.

The blue Silkie is from Carla. Its underside is starting to turn white, does that make it a splash???

And the Sultan was my little rescue baby. But I'm afraid its turning out to be a roo. Any guesses topnotch owners? (He thinks he's hiding in that corner.) I will keep them until the day they crow...

Grace, I'm still not sure if I'll get to go to Shawnee.

It will depend what time my little sister's Pom competition is. Its an hour away from Shawnee. Hopefully it'll be really early or really late!

There are SO many new people, this is GREAT everyone!

Looking at the shape of the tophat...I'd have to say it's a rooster. I have a pair of them, and one looks like that and the other has a completely round puff ball. In my Polish, that is how I tell the difference between the roos and hens when they are young like that. Sorry...I know that isn't what you want to hear.

DutchChic, its ok, I figured it was coming.

Thanks for the input.

doubleostud, wanna own a Sultan? *ha* I like mine, its just as sweet as any of the other chicks I've had.

It and the Silkie both seem very interested in me when I come in their room.

Hubby feels bad that I'm upset about it. He just told me I could get a couple hens if I wanted. Although he did say he likes the two I have now.

So ya, if anyone is going to want a white Sultan and a blue Silkie, let me know.

we went over to her place and picked up some birds a BR Roo, a white silkie Hen and a White crested black Polish Hen, she has a great set up and very easy to work with and best of all I didn't feel like I had been held up when it came time to pay..

doubleo, I'm about two hours south of you.

I'd love for a BYC'er to take them. I'm still going to keep them until they're about 6 months old, for the off chance that they're both hens. So that'll be March or April... My hubby says I have to keep them til they crow. He acts like he's so tough and doesn't like the animals, but he's a sucker for everything I bring home.
