Okies in the BYC The Original

We had another busy day yesterday. We got everything on the new quail pen done, except for the doors to the pen. We went ahead and moved them into the new pen last night. They really enjoyed nesting in the dead leaves and weeds. My husband accidently let one out. It flew into the neighbors yard and all the cats went after it. I was quite amazed that none of them actually attacked the poor bird. They just kept it cornered until my husband could get it in the net. The cats didn't even touch the quail. I was proud. I know they won't touch the chickens, but wasn't sure about the quail because of their size. My cats will sleep in the chicken coop and run. They prefer to be with the teenagers and babies because the smaller birds don't attack them as bad. My sickly self has to get the doors for the quail pen done today, by myself, without letting any out. Hope everyone enjoys another beautiful day.

Thank you for this information. All I've been required to do here to be NPIP certified is to have a certain percentage of my birds tested each year (I've been in the program 6 or 7 years). Maybe the difference is that I don't supply eggs to hatcheries? My flock has also been tested AI clean. I haven't actually set up my incubators out there yet--they've been in the house--and planned to have them in the same room. However, I could easily set the 'bators up in the main room, and there IS a door in between. The only problem is that the air conditioner is in the main room. What do you think?

Nope, you are correct. You only need different rooms if you apply for a hatchery license. That takes another inspection (brief) and another $5 fee. If you are just hatching for yourself you don't need this.

Hey Cuba ,good morning. Yeah I think I want to try either malays or shamos.Which is the biggest? I really like the bantam aseels I have but think I would like the standards better. It just don't seem right to have a bantam so big!lol. He had some nice pics of the cubalayas,,They sure are showy with those full tails.

I think malay are larger than shamo, unless you can get ahold of some of the Juila Keeling line of shamo in the US. Shamoman is the only one I've seen selling large fowl Malay hatching eggs. The breed doesn't lay many eggs in a year so it takes having a lot of hens on hand, and it doesn't help that they take nearly 3 years to mature. Then, in the good lines, the hens don't get along very well so it's not a good idea to have them penned up together. Around spring & fall you can catch a few pairs for sell on eggbid. Will Roberts has had a few on there, he too has quality stock of oriental fowl. I know of several Asil breeders, mostly Reza type which are the smaller asil type without being bantam, a couple of them do sell hatching eggs.

Will has some very nice Cubalaya, unfortunately I've had zero luck hatching eggs that come from PA so I gave up that route. I've bought a breeding pair from his partner Jim Zook (Shamasil) that I'm working with now, along with a few odds and ends of other breeder lines I've managed to collect along the way.

You haven't lived til you've roughed it in the Rockies. Now that I've lived, I'll never do it again. It's a motorhome or travel trailer at the very least for me from now on. Welcome back Monty.

Chickens

At some point Jared is gonna demand to sleep in a tent.
I am gonna get one that you can mount over his bed. Then I can still stay in a motel or motor home.
Seriosly though I love camping and roughing it but my body totally disagrees.

Well I am not a chicken addict or an enabler and to come on and fib about it, well that just wouldn't be right now would it?

Wish you were closer...we need someone to do that here. It's tough being the new kid in town...we've had nothing but trouble with local contractors!
