So frustrating. So my Silkie is the only bird I can show. That's ok though, Betsy definitely raises show quality birds! Maybe after I graduate I can get serious with breeds. If the school accepts my genetics idea, that'll get me some good breeds! What all comes in blue AND self blue? This is just a new idea in the making, I don't know the specs on my senior report yet.
Thanks for the Bumblefoot info, Les - I also put it in a Word doc and saved it in my "Chickens" folder.
Yippee Grace! Good job getting into the BYC Calendar - our chicks are calendar pinup chicks!!
Yet more fantastic photos from Mallen. If you haven't already Matt, you really should submit some of your pictures to BYC for consideration for Picture of the Week. Your photos always show your birds off so well.
Hope everyone is planning for a safe, healthy weekend.
If anyone is needing to place an order before November 30 with EggCartons.com, use the promotion code "GOBBLE" and you will save 20% off your order.
I will need some more nest pads about the first of the year, but I am hoping they will do their free shipping at the end of December, first part of January like they have in some past years. That is when I order heavy things like egg cartons and nest pads from them.

I was wondering how your little "patient" was doing. Sorry to hear she's not doing as well as we would like her to be.
I have a pullet in my bathtub.
Never, in my wildest imaginings, would I have dreamed I would have a chicken in my house! Found the poor thing lying on her side in the henhouse. She's nothing but skin and bones. My flock is just getting over a URI bout. Don't know what the exact kind was. Lost a few of my pullets. DH found one dead this morning that we didn't even know was sick! Hadn't heard so much as a sneeze in a couple of weeks. This little one had been acting a little depressed, but showed no sign of URI. I checked her crop - it was empty. No sign of mites or lice, and no sign on her vent of diarhea. I put a spoon full of canned dog food in front of her and she really went to town on it. Dribbled a bit of sugar water on her beak and she swallowed it. Held some plain water in the palm of my hand and she really slurped it up. She's sleeping now - like a normal chicken would. Has a bit of a bubbly sound, but I may have inadvertently dribbled some water in her naires (sp?). I'm almost afraid to go to sleep tonight for fear I will wake up to a dead chicken in the morning.
Good evening everyone!!!
Grace glad you are ok, my son is going to be showing a black bearded Silkie at Shawnee.....
Les I am glad that you posted the information on Bumble foot I think that I have one with it now I separated her from the rest of the flock this morning so I am going to look for the dark spot and see if that is what it is so I can start treating it!!!
Wishing everyone good luck tomorrow on opening day of deer season I will be out there early and everyone please be safe!!!!
Dee do you have Tylan-50 or Pen? You can inject the birds with either one of these and get good results. I use the same dosage for both. 1cc for standard birds or 1/2cc for bantams. Twice daily for at least 7 days.
Most of the time a bird will not show symptoms till it is nearly too late to save them. If they show illness it is a sign of weakness to the flock and they will lose their place in the pecking order or worse. Often times the only sign of a resp. infection will be the rales or rattling when they breathe and you have to get close to hear it.
The droppings are the best indication of flock health. Yellow and foamy can either be worms or a resp. infection. Red or reddish can often signal Coccidosis and green is bile that is passing from lack of eating. A good dropping is a firm brown with a white cap on it. The white is the urates that they pass.
There is a road just north of me called the Dover/Crescent road that runs from 74 over to 81 about 2 miles north of the river. drive that road early evening or morning. Promise you will get a deer. Talked to a friend that has a body shop and as of last week they had 6 cars in there from deer strikes on that road.
Oh may want to borrow a truck for that drive. would hate to hear of you messing up your own!
