Mike laughs at me for putting hens up to my ear so I can hear if they are rattling (Helllo? Hello? Can someone please answer the hen!).....Aunt Fanny is famous for that...One of my SDOEGs. And I live in fear of having to cull any banties...Mike would bleed out the nose...those are HIS babies....Especially the Squeak family...Heaven forbid...

He always asks me when I'm getting the axe ready..."Isn't there something we can try?" Like I just cull willy nilly... Like I LIKE to cull! Like I WANT to cull...Jeez...There I am bawling my eyes out!!! A DUH moment if there ever was one!!!

Yes, that's what I'm going to aim for when I breed down the Law Gray and Lacey Roundheads. Most of the breeds that have been bred down have lost the dead game of the larger gamefowl. Of my current American Game Bantam's the Grays and the Wheatens are not dead game. They will fight to establish a pecking order, and you might think they are going to kill each other in the process, but sooner or later one of them will give up and that's the end of it. The Hatch on the other hand appears to have not lost much in the game category, I believe that rooster is dead game. One of my goals with the Law and Lacey lines will be to keep them exactly as they are, only smaller. I want them as game as the full size birds.

I once saw a breeding project that a gent had undertook to breed the aggression out of his line of Tuzos. Basically he was tired of having to keep them all seperated and wanted to see them running in flocks. Had them to where he only had a few out of each hatch that were aggressive.

I like to run family groups of birds together where I can. The Orientals are good with that. The roosters will often still dicipline the offspring well after they are grown and the youngsters just stand there and take what's coming.

Some days I just sit and watch the birds interact with each other, they have taught me a lot.

DH went to TSC to try to get Tylan, but he said they were out. He came home with Terrimycin...again. We've already used it. I'm a bit hesitant to use more antibiotics anyway. I fear this is a virus, and they won't help with that.

Yeah, my chickies had some really narly poo for a while. All foamy and runny. Once they recovered from the URI, the poo turned nice and brown, with ice cream on top, as my little granddaughter says. No blood anywhere. This one has icky green poo - no surprise there - she apparently hasn't been eating. Not by choice I am thinking. I think she may have been pushed away from the food more and more as she got weaker. She really pigged out when I brought her inside.

She's going to get a lovely breakfast in the morning - if she makes it through the night. She's still sleeping normally. She hasn't fallen over (or laid down, if that's what it was) since I brought her in. Hopefully, the food and the sugar water gave her enough of a boost...

Going to bed now - five a.m. was a LONG time ago - and I have to get up in the morning and feed all my creatures - daughter isn't very good about feeding her menagerie...

There is a product that will help with CRD and was specially formulated for it. It is LS-50, use it at a rate of 1 teaspoon per gallon of water for seven days. It is a combination of two drugs.

I would also have to ask if you have wormed the birds lately. If they have a big parasite load that could bring their system down so other things will make them sick.

Speaking of which....those big Orps are still dumping worms...nasty things...(worms, not Orps)

It's the middle of the night and I have been fighting with my guitar all night trying to work out a cool flamenco style intro to a song I'm going to do on the platform at Church next month....It's giving me grief...had to take a break else turn the guitar into firewood.....LOL.... I had it worked out in my head...but for the life of me cannot get it onto the guitar...I'm locked up....Maybe I will go out into the cold dark night and check orp leg.....get some air...freeze me arse off! AAARRGGHH!!

Cammie - You can show your Marans, they just won't be able to place in certain categories (each show has different rules). I believe Cuckoo marans are in the ABA standard and currently there is an effort trying to get the Black Copper marans accpeted into the APA.

I haven't wormed them - haven't seen any sign of worms. I can worm them, though. What would you recommend? Also, were can I get the LS-50?

Good morning fellow okies in the BYC,hope you are enjoying this fine Saturday.

Hubby and I will be heading down to Wichita Falls to pick up a free goose that someone is giving away. Really pretty from the pictures, we had to let the owners know, that NO we wont eat it... It was weird being on the other side of the phone call listening to hubby describe our "farm" with all the animals we have... I guess they wanted to make sure we would be great people to let the goose go home too. We are really loving this life, hard work but the rewards are so worth it... Its just learning to say no to more animals...HA HA HA, I guess we will learn to say no after the first of the year...ya know as part of a News Years Resolution,,, I solemly swear we will no longer aquire more animals after the first of the year.. ......

I definately couldn't keep that resolution. It's taking all I have right now to not plug the bators back in. My last hatch finished a couple of days ago with 7 baby guineas.

I have to leave the bators empty until after the holidays because they are in the corner that my Christmas tree goes in. I'm starting to debate whether to set the tree up or just decorate the bators for Christmas.

I'm starting to wonder which one I want more and I really love decorating for the holidays.

Work at the new job went well yesteday. I spent 3 hours in the morning doing paperwork and another 3 hours in the afternoon watching safety videos. I wanted to die when I got home. I think the utter boredom wore me out worse than actual work.

We culled all the meat birds last night. They are past processing age/weight and keep getting sick. They were scooting themselves on the ground because their legs had given out, but we couldn't process because of medication. I just couldn't see them suffer anymore.

I think we are going to do some craft projects today. It will be my only Saturday off work for a while. They are having me work 6 days a week during training. Luckily they aren't the 14 hour days that come after training.

Have a great day.
