You might also check at Lumber 2 or even Walmart

Was at Lumber 2 yesterday afternoon with J, we couldn't find one. Walmart had one but the sides were only like an inch and half tall. I'm gonna go by the auto parts store after I take J his lunch that he forgot this morning.

I about fell out of my chair laughing with this. I read it to my husband and he was cracking up too. It is so true, I have thought similar things several times.

My husband shot a decent buck yesterday. Only 8 pts, but lots of mass and palmation. He field dressed 162. Big bodied. Unfortunately, he had an old injury that was infected and we are getting rid of the meat. When he field dressed him his chest had a lot of pus in it. Pretty gross. We will donate it to the coyotes.
Any thoughts on how to wean my chicks off of a heat source? My brooder is a dog kennel box in my coop. My coop is a converted dog kennel from previous owners. The box is 3 foot tall, 3' x 4'. Solid top. I have the lamp in there with the top cracked open a few inches. A regular light bulb didn't give them much light and they piled on each other. Had to go back to a heat lamp.

Here is a short vid of a home built whizbang plucker. Just drop in the bird and it will pluck it.

I made my feeder out of a 5 gallon bucket by cutting four 2 inch holes evenly spaced around the bottom egde (on the side of the bucket, down at the bottom), then I set it in a metal oil pan that you can get just about anywhere for $4, got mine at Atwoods. It has about a 4 inch side and is bigger around than the 5 gallon buck. Filled the bucket with feed, put the lid on .. and there ya go, home made feeder.

The same thing could be done for a smaller coop or flock, just use a smaller bucket.

Made my waterer the same way, only for this I drilled four 3/8" holes evenly spaced around the outside edge of the bucket up at the top. Fill it with water, put the lid on, turn it up-side-down in the metal pan & Viola! Home made waterer. Just make sure the holes you drill in the top edge of the bucket are about an inch below the top edge of the metal pan's rim.

I just couldn't see paying $20 or more for something I could make for 6 or 7 bucks.

For the waterer, couldn't you still drill the holes in the bottom and have the lid on top so you just have to take the lid off to refill?

I have a 5 gallon bucket that I was planning on doing exactly what you describe with... my problem is finding the metal oil pan. I haven't been able to find one, seriously. I must be looking in the wrong places. I found a plastic one at HD, but it wasn't big enough. The nearest Atwoods is Norman and I never can get there before they close. I must be missing finding it somewhere... that's the only explanation I can think of off the top of my head.

Until you find one, just about anything solid will work for the feeder. You could even make a box out of scrap 2 x 4's & a square piece of plywood. Some pet stores will carry large metal pans.... Great Danes gotta eat out of something. Even a heavy duty cardboard box cut to size would work until you can find a metal pan.

What about even a cat litter box, you can find them at Dollar General or Wal-Mart.

osu - Luckily I don't think I have to present my senior paper or anything. And my senior capstone class is online! My big focus this semester somehow became Wetland Protection, that's what my presentation is over. Hopefully I can use it toward my senior paper.

OU has no such thing as dead week. We're never out of school for ANYTHING except Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and OU/Texas weekend...
I've never had an allergic reaction to anything! I can't imagine being allergic to penicillin, or peanuts. I'm very thankful! But since I've had several IV contrast injections before, and never had a reaction, I'm afraid that I may be developing other allergies.

poultryandbees - I bet the Exxon report caused quite a stink! My dad told me there's an active lawsuit where Arkansas's chicken farms are polluting Oklahoma's side of a river! They told me I should've done my report over that, but I don't want to create any chicken negativity. Lol

Henny - I think if you go hunting with someone who has a license, you are considered an 'apprentice' and don't have to take the class. That's what I'm doing.

Stray - You are very brave to perform your chicken emergency operation! I don't know how you do it, I sure couldn't!

Carla - Sounds like you and Gerald need to be quarantined from each other for a while, so you'll quit passin cooties! Lol

MAllen & Al - So glad you posted your instructions for the water and feeder buckets. I've been needing one for feed and really didn't want to spend the 30-50 bucks for one.

Clark took me out to dinner and movie last night, and bought me a big Christmas cactus.

First time I've been somewhere other than the hospital in a while. Lol
Hope everyone's having a great day! Its about holiday time!
