Yeah, funny how that memory thing works sometimes. I used to watch reruns of it every day after school and remember Doby's soliloquies were often delivered in front of The Thinker, but I vaguely recall Maynard trying it once or twice, so maybe both our memories are working okay.

I think us kids were supposed to identify with college boy Doby and Maynard was thrown in for comic relief and what not. Pretty much backfired for me, though, since I identified with Maynard far more than Doby. He was my roll model as a kid. How I ever got out of elementary school is beyond me.

When eggs are candled late you rarely see movement as they are pretty crammed in the shell, A rule of thumb is to always leave them well past hatch day just in case, only toss them when they smell or are weeping/sweating. I think at some point we have all learned this terrible lesson. Don't beat yourself up about it, it happens to us all.

Thanks. I spent the better part of the morning beating myself up... but, I'm just chalking this up to a learning experience...and this is one mistake I definitely won't make again. And, I'll just try to find local eggs to hatch from now on...and buy a hydrometer...and incubate all silky eggs next time so that I'm sure to get at least one...and and and and...

At least I might end up with one olive egger out of my 10 chicks.

Thanks again!

Were these shipped eggs? If i'm figgering right thats real close to 44% which isn't bad for shipped eggs.

Now with eggs from someone else flock you MUST remember that you have absolutely no control of the two most important things. Flock nutrition and health. The person selling may get a 100% hatch every time, they have a very short trip to their incubator.

And we won't even mention things like drop-kicked boxes or a ride in a non air-ride truck through rough states or the lack of climate control in those trucks.

There is a reason that a hen doesn't carry an egg around before sitting it to hatch. They are fragile.

Just relaxing after getting a round bale put in for the horses. Teva got blankets on all but one, he doesn't like it.

A little later I am going to go out and move some birds and cover some pens too. Gotta make sure that I am prepared so the weather is nice instead of snowing!!

Hey, Muesky, I'll take some of that action!

Actually, I'm already planning on two orders from different hatcheries this spring for an experiment I want to try. I'm going to order 25 Freedom Rangers from JM Hatchery, 25 Cornish X from Murry or perhaps Ideal, about the same time I will be hatching out a batch of my Dark Cornish. They will be raised in the same pasture in separate tractors. Since I'm always badmouthing the Cornish X I figure I should at least raise some just once to see what the fuss is all about. And I want to compare the Rangers to my DC, since if I were to switch to a hybrid someday, the Freedom Rangers would probably be it.

Anyway, you could piggyback on one or both of my orders when they happen.

Not wet here yet. It'll start about 10 minutes before I go outside. But for the first time since I was a wee one I bought a slicker suit this year.
