The rubberized gloves I recommend for keeping your hands dry while busting ice for your chickens and critters are called "Glacier Glove" and are designed for fishing, hunting and outdoor purposes. The website is www.glacieroutdoor.com and Lumber 2 sells them for $19.99 plus tax. I bought another pair this afternoon since I can't find the pair I bought last year - and was able to get them in a size small, which I couldn't do last year. The tag says Ice Bay 812BK and describes them as "The original Glacier Glove ICI BAY Neoprene Waterproof Glove. Fleece lined 2mm Sharkskin Neoprene. Blind stitched and glued.

If you get water in them from the cuff, your hands will get cold (note to self - do not put hand all the way into the bucket of cold water

)
Otherwise, they are nice for this weather, when you tend to get your fingers wet pulling ice out of the rubberized tubs after you smash the bottom of the tub with the heel of your boot to break the inch thick ice.

So what time is the auction in Blanchard? Did I read right that it is not that far from Shawnee? Hmmmm, I may have to be driving all over Oklahoma this weekend. What would there probably be at the auction?

According to Mapquest, it is about 57 miles. Of course, as with everything else, distance is "relative" Since you are already going to be this far South at Shawnee, you ought to try to make it to Blanchard. You can expect chickens of all ages and varieties. Pigeons, ducks, geese, rabbits, feeders, waterers, decent cages, tacky cages, and if you really aren't looking to buy, you can probably sit with a bunch of BYC okies at the back table and visit instead of paying attention to the auction.

At Blanchard, the goats sell at 3:00, I think and then the poultry part begins at 5:00.

Edited because I am having problems thinking in complete sentences. This sinus congestion is the pits. Time for more hot tea and honey.

Welcome to a wonderful group of folks, some of whom are addicted to poultry auctions, hatching poultry and acquiring poultry. Disclaimer: if you don't already have said addictions, we heartily invite you to become addicted along with us. So, what kind of chickens/poultry do you have and what would you like to acquire? Between the Shawnee chicken show this weekend and the Blanchard auction on Saturday night, we ought to be able to get you into serious chicken raising.

I live in Pond Creek (front yard is in town, back yard is out of town) on 3 acres. I free range my chickens and lock them in the barn at night. I currently have 21 hens, 4 roosters, and 51 pullet chicks in the brooder. The hens that are laying are 10 Pearl White Leghorns, 3 Silver laced Wyandottes, 3 RIRs, 1 White Rock, 2 Black Jersey Giants, and 2 Splash Jersey Giants. I have 1 Pearl White Leghorn roo,
2 Black Jersey Giant roos, and 1 Blue Jersey Giant roo. One black giant and the blue giant are for sale. In the brooder I have 25 black sexlinks and 26 buff orpingtons. Also currently selling eggs in the area. Really need to sell those two roosters - they are overly loving my hens and they are too handsome to eat!

I didn't know where Pond Creek was, had to look it up. I bet it is really cold there. Is Pond Creek in the flatlandish area? I have never been up that way, that I know of for sure, except maybe when driving to Colorado and there was definitely some flat open land on the way there.

I think the cotton particles in the air would be as bad as breathing hay dust. Have you considered wearing a paper mask?

It's pretty flat and yes it is cold. 11 degrees this morning, -5 degrees with wind chill. I like it here. I'm originally from Frederick in SW OK and there's not a lot of difference between the two. Sand, red dirt, hot summers and cold winters - just like home!

I'm just gonna try to make it through the next couple days. Got an appointment for a chiropractor for Friday at 4pm. My back kinked up so bad today that sitting down hurts, standing up hurts, and it's driving me batcrap crazy.

But Shawnee is a nice diversion
