I'd love to have baby turkeys, but my city won't allow it. Heck, they don't allow chickens either. Stupid city.

We only ever got about an inch of snow... but it was very cold and windy!!

Grace - where are you located? I'm moving there! We got over 11" of the stuff and now we have mud like you would not believe! I was walking into the house from my car this evening and stepped in a hole I didn't know was there. I had muddy, icey water halfway up my knee!

I live just south of Durant. It does seem to be a pretty "protected" place - no snow or ice storms and no tornadoes...

Q, are the Cochin eggs from your own birds (from Bill)? Did you trim their feathers around the vents? How old are the parents? One of my hens has just started laying, but I can't decide how/if I'm setting these eggs or not...

Where the heck do you find chopped hay?

As for running up to the neighbors that would be a good idea, just ask him if you can buy some. I think I am confussed anyways. The neighbor should have hay to feed his cattle not straw. That might be a problem if you are asking where to find "straw" instead of hay.

Cattle on wheat pasture need straw to help prevent bloat. Too much rich green matter can ferment in the stomach and kill a cow.

Grace thanks so much for the bookswap deal. I am really enjoying it. Have sent a lot and am adding to my collection of favorites. Haven't found any on poultry yet but keep looking.

update...
All seems well in the flock. No signs of illness. Young stupid roo
is in garage in box... He did eat today like a pig and drank alot.
The limp leg is still just that. Limp. Does not pull out to the side and the
other leg is still fine. Feathers can NOT be pulled out without really trying.
So after taking dog to vet for licking his leg clean I will call that number,
I will worm all chickens. If this dosnt work I want to cull it. It is a roo and
unless his leg comes back to life it woulnt be fair.
HOWEVER I am a California city person.... Is their a easy way ? I have looked
up the culling with the head jerk but dang thats bad......
Over dose maybe ??
Thanks you guys for being here. I know I do not post often.

Interesting, I have only heard the farmers talk about hay. Learn something new everyday.

You can also ask an Ag teacher at a school near you. They should know a source because they use wheat straw for bedding during fair time.

Grace, the eggs that I set are out of my birds, I just did some experimenting with a blue hen and a Birchen rooster, so I am gonna see what I come up with, I was sure that the feathers around the vent were trimmed so that breeding would be somewhat easier lol, I didnt have any alarms last night according to the temp and humidity in the bator so I think that I am set, how often should I candle the eggs or do I even need to?

Hey everyone!
Ok now correct me if I am wrong which happens more often then not, but I thought it was dangerous to use straw with chickens. I believe I read on BYC somewhere ages ago that if the chickens try to eat the straw it will get stuck in their crops and will kill them since it can not be digested. Also did not Beth have trouble this summer with chickens eating hay and making them sick???
What we use in our coop and carriers is shredded paper. As a teacher I get a ready supply (if you ask around to some of your local businesses they usually are more then willing to donate shredded paper, especially if you tell them what it is used for) and then when the chickens are done with the paper I compost it. It is a win win situation since it keeps the paper that would otherwise be thrown in the garbage out of the land fills, it is easy to clean and the chickens love it. To be honest I think they really like the colored paper better which is weird because I always thought they were color-blind, but they will sit in the boxes that have more colored paper more then the ones that just have the white paper. Crazy birds!
Well I am going to leave pretty soon to get some chickens. I am really excited about it because that means I am getting CHICKENS!!!!
