After all the issues I've had with dogs before, including my daughter's 20 lb mutt that almost got herself punted to kingdom come by snapping/chasing a cockerel the other day, I really don't think I want to get ANY dogs when I move. I'm thinking guard llamas.

I have heard some pro and cons regarding llamas.... I think one of them being they dont guard as good as dogs would or Jacks... I believe I read it in a article on Hobby Farms

Something about they let more predators pass than not... but I think also if we "pet and love" to much to the point where it makes any of our guard animals espeically flock guardians deter from their job than its all human error... I cant begin to say how many times I have laid into my husband and our kids NOT to PLAY with Jackson or puppy talk him... as these are his training years and he will not do his job and thus will be a waste of Money if he ends up being a "House kinda Dog" which I DO NOT WANT...

I'd consider a Jack before I seriously consider another dog. It doesn't help that I don't have a fondness for the right KIND of dog. Never turn your back on a GSD around chickens... unless you want dead chickens, that is.

I considered llamas and guard donkeys, and think they would do a great job keeping big predators like dogs, coyotes and bobcats away, but I'm not sure they would do so well against smaller predators like coons and possums. I figure with my dogs, they will take care of pretty much anything that comes along, large or small.

Oh I understand the reasoning, and maybe if I had more affinity for dogs *and* the time/energy/education to train one properly, I might not rule it out. However, as it stands for me, getting a dog for guarding purposes just isn't the smartest choice for me.

Ooooo. Just got an email notification that a book I requested through InterLibraryLoan is in... decided to check it out before committing to purchasing it, "Storey's guide to raising chickens". I totally just put that in the sentence all kinds of grammatically wrong...

Yeah, part if it is that I just like dogs, I guess. I'm glad I found an excuse to get a few more. I had to stop reading the Predators and Pests forum because all the dog shooting threads were just ticking me off.

That is what most of the training manuals say you are supposed to do, although I have read different opinions on it. I have mixed feelings about that. I definitely want my dogs to be people-friendly, and not like the surly beasts I have seen on some farms. Last thing in the world I want is a horror story like this one...

You know, I'm gonna back away from this article with my hands up.
