Are all the ducks the same age? Can you catch them? You can tell when a pullet starts laying by vent checking her to see if the pelvic bones have spread out to allow the passage of the egg. I would suspect that ducks are similar in that regard. You also could isolate each of them and see which ones lay an egg during their isolation. Of course, changing their environment will probably keep them from laying more than the one egg for about a week until they get readjusted, so you need to decide how important it is to know what each might be laying.

Also if you can catch them--I've been told you can put a few drops of food coloring on their vents and a little will be on each egg for awhile. That should be long enough to determine which one laid which egg if the eggs themselves are different enough.

Good morning:

Hope you are enjoying your morning thus far..... came home yesterday to find 2 of our 4 horses had gone astray... funny though it was the girls that were gone and not the boys... I guess Trisket and Durango figured it was time for a "ladies night" out and the 2 colts were left in the pasture(Sterling & Brighton)... We found them though across the road in someones elses pasture and we walked them home....

It was funny to see our geese go hollering at the girls when we were bringing them home it was as if they were scolding them for leaving

I wonder what adventure will be happening today?

that is an excellent idea - maybe I could use that method to figure out which hen is laying an egg so large that it won't fit into the carton - I want to buy some more of whatever variety she is. I suspect it is either a black sex-link or a golden comet (red sex-link) since that is what most of my laying flock is comprised of. I have a couple of EEs that are laying pretty green eggs and some laying pink eggs and would like to figure out which is which on those as well. The pink egg layers lay a larger egg, but I really love the color of the green/blue-green eggs.

Good morning Okies! Its going to be a pretty day, already above freezing.

P&B - Did you decide if you are going to play hooky from work Friday. I'm trying to drag my other half to Prague early with promises that he will get to vidit with you... lol. What time do they usually start on friday at the prague auction?

Yay! That is nice to hear that they were so kind.

You must not be talking about getting MF Cochins from Ideal. I have been wanting to get MF Cochins forever now, or so it feels. So where would you be ordering some MF Cochin chicks? Do you also know where to get Standard Mottled Cochins?

At this time I am not going to order MF cochins but maybe in April or May I will. As far as I have seen none of the hatcheries have Standard Mottled Cochins. I would love to have some if they did. Maybe that could be a breeding program to start. My guess would be to breed barred cochins with black cochins to get the Mottled but I have not seen Standard size barred cochins.

I will let everyone know when I am going to order soon.

Nope you can't get MF cochins from Ideal or McMurray. However, I too would love to see black mottled standard size cochins.

Good morning all! I'm also looking forward to the weather today - the weather liars have promised me temps in the 50s here today and I plan to hold them to it! The ladies are out in the backyard clucking around - I hope no hawks are on the wing scoping out my backyard. I heard a crow when I let them out, so perhaps there are no hawks today.
