mentioned it to hubby and he immediately says, 'i was gonna expand the coop anyway!'

so here is my criteria- docile breeds and cold hardy.....egg laying isn't a big issue as we are swimming in eggs now! not that my inlaws mind!

oh, also thinking of getting a golden feather membership- what is opinions on how it works and do you like it? seeing as this is about my only internet stop now!!

I have read and heard from people here on BYC and in books, rule of thumb to ensure fertility 3-5 hens per rooster. Of course I am sure if you have 6 or 7 hens you might want to supplement the roosters' diet with vitamin V (if you know what I mean)

.
I like to have a rooster for every three hens since I have a lot of different breeds. Of course not all my roosters stay with the hens I choose for them. Planning on setting up a breeder pen for the birds this spring. Let you all know what birds will be breed when if someone wants eggs or chicks.

Artsy, do be careful with turkeys and chickens mixed. Grown turkeys that have not been around chickens when introduced into a flock can do a tremendous amount of harm and interupt the harmony of the barnyard. Turkeys are so much larger and usually have enormous appetites. They tend to push the smaller birds away from the feed trough or will peck smaller birds.

And the same goes with guineas. The best way to introduce guineas is from keets with baby chicks sharing the same brooder together. Quite often they have a personality conflict but soon outgrow it.

We've even had a RIR rooster that preferred our guinea hens over our RIR hens and pullets.

might go for the buff brahmas, they are beautiful! my guineas get along with the chickens, so far haven't had a problem with them. I guess turkeys go on the back burner for now... hopefully orchelns will get some brahmas in- my poor brahma roo - barny- is still a bit hen pecked, a couple of the girls are not impressed

they will actually run him off...but they do listen when he finds treats

Evening Everyone!

Ok so I would definetly like to talk to Hoodoo and Buster more about wind, solar and alternative energy. It is something I have wanted to do for quite a few years now and have done a lot of work but would like to talk to other people to run my ideas by.

Also I had a brain fart and did not save the website for the hatchery located just southwest of Tulsa near Stroud I believe. If anyone knows the name of this hatchery or has their email address I would be very greatful. They have Favorelles and black Ameraucanas which are two kind of birds I want to get, but can not remember the name. Duh!!!

You know many of us are into living more self-sustaining and I think we as a community could work together to make that happen for everyone. My philsophy is no one makes it til we all do. Yes, yes I know I am a socialist at heart and am not ashamed to admit it. I really like Hoodoo's idea of bartering and so here is my thinking, many of us have or will have gardens, so instead of us all growing the same things, each of us grow certain things an swap with each other. Kinda like a traditional coop. For those who can not have a garden they could trade out other things, like eggs, birds, labor, just to name a few things. Uli and I are planning on growing unsual hard to find things like beefsteak and heirloom tomatoes, purple potatoes, shallots, just to name a few of the things we want to grow. Unfortantely I do not think we have the soil to grow corn and Uli does not like squash enough for me to grow it, so if someone is going to be growing these I would love to trade. Just a thought!

Better head to bed, finally I can go to work tomorrow.

Have a great night all!

HEY Muesky
i havent got to build the wind generator i have the plans just not all the parts, but i have helped putting then together for a friend of mine.
what kind of soil do you need to grow corn/ I am growing melons and sqash and potatoes, I am not real big on tomatoes but was going to grow for the sake of trading and selling.
i am alsoo growing green beans lettuce carrots oh and some pumpkins later these are to donate to kids classes....Some kids dont get pumpkins for halloween and i want every kid to have one......unless it is a spiritual thing and parent dont allow and i appreciate and respect that. I build my kids their own private haunted house on halloween.....i no im a dork but hey they have a great time wich everyone would be invited next year, its free and the adults are the actors so.......but back to the solar wind ideas. my offer still stands for people here if you need help with it i am happy to help.

The Golden Feather membership is very handy if you communicate with folks through PMs, because it increases your message storage space - a lot. It also gives you more space for storing pictures on BYC. And of course, you get to choose a unique description for yourself. I really like the extra storage space for messages.

The South Central Poultry Club show will be Saturday Feb. 13th. The club had a few scheduling conflicts so there will be a new judge. Monty Fitzgerald will be the new judge. Monty will judge the jr. show and the open show also. Sorry for the short notice and the changing of the judge. This was the best option the club had due to availibilty of the building and the judges.

We live on Kleeman and YES power was restored to us around 6:30pm after the Kansas Electric folks spent all early morning and evening fixing the lines that went down on this lane. Al is next one over on Trail so I hope they will move into his direction... Always hope for the best but expect and plan for the worst. Funny though after power was restored we all still walked around the house as if it wasnt..lol I told Jason before we turned in for the night that I was actually some what sad I actually enjoyed the time with out so much power instantly accessible, the only thing I had regretted was not being able to cook or prepare meals more properly on a cast iron wood burning stove(ordering soon) or camp stove(on its way next week) I love cooking with my cast iron kettles and pans and so I was bummed I didnt get to do the full pioneer thing like my late grandmother did.. Call me weird but I have always looked at our modern day conviences a bit more complex than needed... Dont get me wrong I have enjoyed using internet to meet fine folks such as you all but dont you think with all these make life easier has only made us LAZY and NOT SELF RELIANT and APPRECIATIVE? Again just my own opinion.
