welcome and i love NY been there once ok twice, i dont know about any other types of birds however that is what i have are barred rocks and balck austros and will be hatching some once they start laying more eggs again, however just barely enough to eat right now. i will also be selling rhode island reds. they are good layers from what i hear from a friend of mine. if you just want to eat alot of eggs.

Well thank you! I miss NY from time to time, but the people here are far more pleasant. What parts did you visit? I grew up on Long Island, but would love to live upstate someday if we could manage it. I miss my crazy family, lol...
Someone had suggested RIR's to me. We've kind of shyed away since because we're hoping the austros and BR's will be friendlier. We'll be the first people in the neighborhood to get chickens so I would like them to be good ambassadors. Most of the neighbors have younger children (ourselves included)

I visited NYC and manhattan, then for culture i went into queens and brooklyn and harlem, just to see the beauty side of NY as I like old building that and wanted to see why people are so scared of these places......

TJ's Na-Na :

Don't remember who, for sure, came out with the
song, "Country Folk Will Survive".....LOL
"We can skin a buck all day long and
catch catfish from dusk till dawn. Country
Folk Will Survive"..........

I'm laughing....again...at my cousin in Houston.
She's the one that couldn't figure out why on
earth someone in Oklahoma would pay $8 for
a chicken when she could buy one at the store...
without feathers already...for $2. Got an email
from her today. They've had a really rough week
down there.........was below freezing for "2" days
last week !!!!!!!!!!! Hope and pray that it works
for them for the duration. But, despite the
hardships, believe we'll stay right here and,
as best we can through this storm, Thank God
for Oklahoma !!!

Have a good one !

Bless her dear city heart!

My favorite sustainable agriculture guy is Joel Salatin, and he is extremely conservative both religiously and politically. I have found it doesn't really matter why someone is doing it, just that they are. It's like simple living in that regard. People get into it for a million different reasons, but in the end it is more about what they are doing than why.

well the hippie thing was in the 60s and 70s and i can respect that but being a child of parents that grew up in the era then listening to kids my age and younger speak is like are you for real, they think a hippie is someone who goes and get high in the woods and becaomes one with nature on lsd and not really understanding why they are in a forest at a rainbow gathering. They dont listen to the elders speaking about the enviroment and what is taking place, they think it some rebelious party against the man, well i have been to a few gatherings and I par took in some of the festivities but I knew why I was there. then to have to clean the forest when the mass majority left who didnt get the message bummed me out, I was in the forrest for 4 weeks, to for the gathering and wich I found out the ne3xt weeks why they called it that, you had to gather all the trash and clothes and crap that these young so called hippy kids left behind. I just wasnt into the oh lets hug a tree it is our friend and dont eat the animals, I ask this guy telling me this.....(him not understanding im from oklahoma) so i hug the trees because they are my friend. Dont eat the animals cause they are my friend, well why cant a apple be my friend.......I just smiled as he walked away screaming " I dont know"

Welcome to a wonderful thread that has lots of folks with helpful information, some of whom are addicted to hatching poultry, acquiring poultry and attending poultry auctions.
Disclaimer: Since addicts tend to be enablers, some of us may try to get you addicted to hatching eggs, attending poultry auctions and acquiring poultry, if you do not already have said addictions. So, tell us what kind of poultry you are thinking of acquiring?

Contessa We have RIRs. Very sweet birds over all. Before he died of old age our rooster had spurs that were curved like sabres and near three inches long. Never once did he put a feather out of place on the girls nor did he ever challange one of us.

If you want a rooster that is not agressive buy it from a breeder with calm birds. Aggression is a trait that can be bred into a line and one should never breed from a rooster that shows this trait.

Nice! I never liked going into Manhattan but it's fun to do once in a while. Parts of Harlem and Brooklyn are really nice - much of the bad rap they get is from movies and whatnot. You can go fishing from off Sheepshead bay if the weather permits too.

How have you liked your birds so far?

Thank you! We're thinking about black australorps and barred rocks. I'm a little concerned that this is going to become an addiction for me which is why I'm taking it slow, hahahaha!

I've been meaning to post a thank you to all the okies we met recently at an auction in Blanchard we had a great time and it was very nice to meet everyone. All the chickens, dove, pigeons, chukar, quail made it home safe and are amazed to see green grass not snow and ice here in central Texas. I'd also like to thank my older brother teach97 (he's not bigger just older) again for the hospitality and for the great midnight tour of central OK. Thanks again everybody we will come back for sure!

I still haven't ruled RIRs out to be honest - they were the first suggestion of a co-worker who keeps chickens. I was thinking it might not be bad to get one of each - I have to keep a really small flock. My husband was kind of lukewarm about this so I had him looking at breeds with me to try and drum up some more interest and he liked the way the BR's looked. When I read about them a little more they seemed to be in line what we were looking for, so they became a major consideration. We can't have a roo

Bethany allows chickens as long as the coop is kept clean and they're not considered to be a nuisance by the neighbors.

Thank you for sharing. I would really rather learn from people's experiances than descriptions in books. I just know I don't want to go with a bird that's bred to be an "egg machine". I had thought about Dominiques at one point also because I thought it might be nice at some point (if we could have a roo) to work with an old breed. I really have no idea what the best way is to go yet...
