Hi Contessa,

We are not too far apart...I am in Moore. What kind of chickens do you like?

Oh yay! I know where Moore is!

I was thinking about barred rocks and australorps - we don't have any peeps yet. I see a lot of good stuff about both breeds. We're planning to keep them for eggs. I'm very open to suggestions - this will be the first time either of us have kept chickens. My husband has experience with some livestock and I used to keep small exotics so we're doing a lot of learning and planning right now.

Thanks for the welcome Sooner & FPA as well!

TJ's Na-Na :

Gees, I hate this sooooo for y'all that are without
power. A couple of days is one thing, but this
extended stuff is another. Here I sit in
Tahlequah with three canners, plenty of lids,
a propane stove, and a 1 hp meat grinder.
Slims the menu somewhat, but saves the
meat investment.

Guess all I can fuss about is the ice sheet that
is sliding off the new metal roof.....tore the
cables off the satelitte dish..........NOPE, no way
am I really fussing !!!!!!!

Welcome to the "newbies". The rule around here
is that you aren't a "newbie" but for your first
post. Then, you're part of the best group of
folks you'll ever hope to join.....bar none !

Have a good one !

Hey Eulaine...sure am looking forward to seeing you folks at POOPS. It's been too long since we've got to chat. Hope everything is ok with you all.

Well, looks like I'm about to go fire up the 'bator.
I got a call this morning, that someone had donated 20 hatching eggs to the county Ag. agent, and my 4-H Poultry Club was first on his list to call.
I hadn't planned on messing with an incubator for another month or so, but hey free eggs can change things!

And since I'm going to be running it anyway.... well, I might as well fill it!

My favorite sustainable agriculture guy is Joel Salatin, and he is extremely conservative both religiously and politically. I have found it doesn't really matter why someone is doing it, just that they are. It's like simple living in that regard. People get into it for a million different reasons, but in the end it is more about what they are doing than why.

Well thank you! I miss NY from time to time, but the people here are far more pleasant. What parts did you visit? I grew up on Long Island, but would love to live upstate someday if we could manage it. I miss my crazy family, lol...
Someone had suggested RIR's to me. We've kind of shyed away since because we're hoping the austros and BR's will be friendlier. We'll be the first people in the neighborhood to get chickens so I would like them to be good ambassadors. Most of the neighbors have younger children (ourselves included)

Don't remember who, for sure, came out with the
song, "Country Folk Will Survive".....LOL
"We can skin a buck all day long and
catch catfish from dusk till dawn. Country
Folk Will Survive"..........

I'm laughing....again...at my cousin in Houston.
She's the one that couldn't figure out why on
earth someone in Oklahoma would pay $8 for
a chicken when she could buy one at the store...
without feathers already...for $2. Got an email
from her today. They've had a really rough week
down there.........was below freezing for "2" days
last week !!!!!!!!!!! Hope and pray that it works
for them for the duration. But, despite the
hardships, believe we'll stay right here and,
as best we can through this storm, Thank God
for Oklahoma !!!

Have a good one !
