Jarvis. I tend to agree with Buster, once its left my property its their responsiblitity. Especially when they came and picked it out and insisted on buying it and set the price. They could see what they bought, and you have no way of knowing what they might have done to bring on his death. Now if you refund you are out a roo that someone else might have paid $50 for.Like someone else said ,we have all bought birds at auctions that were sick and died soon after. With live birds its the risk you take. I would rethink this if I were you. At very least pay no more than half the price even if he comes up the bird dead!

hope everyone enjoys the weekend auctions. I am going to one in Elkton ,Ky tomorrow. Its mostly poultry, with a few goats, pigs, calf or two. Usually a very good chicken sale. I don't need anything but am always on the lookout for a bargain!

I have had that problem with selling Flemish Giant rabbits. One family bought 2 bucks, with the first one dying about 2 weeks after they got it and the second one dying about a week after they got it. They didn't ask for their money back, but their check didn't clear either

The also bought a doe each time they bought a buck and the does have done fine. The mom admitted the second time around that the buck was in the same cage as the doe for 3 days.

I was able to secure one of the new BYC Banners for use at our spring event in OKC, the demand for them has grown so they made 2 more. you now have to qualify to get it, not just a request. They will choose them by which groups are the biggest and best organized, of course we got one with our credentials LOL.

Ah. Well, I didn't see the part about dog prints. Must have missed that. I'm just surprised the dogs only killed one bird, plus the rest of your description certainly sounds like a coon attach. I was thinking you had both coon and dog problems.

Anything is possible. The part that makes me think we only have a dog problem is that we've had chickens in these pens for over a year without a single loss from predators. The first roosters were killed the evening after I chased the dogs off the property. I saw the dogs twice after that, around dusk each time, and then one rooster was killed last night. Two guineas have been killed during the day while I've been at work. Coons hunt at night, as do owls, so I'm pretty sure the guineas were killed by dogs during the day. The only hawk that hunts over our pastures is half the size of any of the guineas now, so I'm pretty sure Mr. Hawk is innocent.

I've never been able to get anywhere near the coons or possums. The skunks will challenge me, though, so I always yield the right of way to them.

I'll stay up and observe the chicken yard from the porch until it gets too cold or I get too tired. I put some laced meatballs out near the pen where the last rooster was killed. If the bait is gone in the morning, I'll look around for the next few days for something dead that needs to go on the next burn pile.

With larger breeds it does happen. They grow so fast that the walls of the arteries around the heart are thin and stress makes them rupture. If you are watching them at the time it happens the comb will turn blue and they are dead before they hit the ground. Only a necropsy will determine the cause but if the bird was frozen after death there will be no conclusions drawn as freezing destroys both cell walls and any disease traces if that was the cause.

Im sorry your having problems...
However I bought two chickens from
the same person at the last poops.
Both were brought right home after
I bought them. Had our own stupid party..
One chicken died about 15 mins after I
got home and they were together in the
"holding pen". The alive chicken is wonderful
and VERY friendly and I know the lady took
good care of all her chickens.
I still have a wonderful secret.....

ok...here is one for you...the silky mopsy i had assumed was a girl.... well...she started crowing today- or what sounds like an attempt- so i have two silky roos, who are best friends-

Good Evening Everyone!

Al glad to hear you got the truck fixed and will be at Cement and Blanchard tomorrow.

Stephanie, sorry to hear about your trouble with the guy that bought your rooster. I have lost a number of birds that just croaked the next day I bought them. The birds I lost were most likely due to stress. Also if the guy took them home in the back of his truck then they may have gotten too cold on the way. Who knows, I do think a lock down for a while would be a good idea and would suggest the same thing to the purchaser. You know the langshan I bought from you are just growing likes weeds. Everyone of them I got from you can Carl are healthy and actually really friendly. Both of the roosters are over 14 inches tall already.

Weeds, Weeds I tell you!

Maribeth, make a chicken moat along the outside of your hive is a great idea. I have considered making a chicken moat around the garden to keep the pest problem down. Before we plant I will let the chickens go in to garden area and till up all the plant matter to eat seeds and bugs, oh and of course fertilize as well. Between the llamas and chickens I do not have to mow or worry about fertilizer. You can use rabbit poop as fertilizer, my aunt did and she had very productive gardens.

Well I have gotten the brooders cleaned and moved some of the older adolencent chicks out to the coop. I am going to put the chicks I bought from Ideal in the grow out pen in a couple of weeks, since they should be ready by then. I have an empty brooder, this is not good!!

Ok so the things I am looking for tomorrow. Dark brahmas (pair or trio would be nice), sultans, salmon favorelles (just can not get enough of them), ameraucana (need a black, white or blue rooster), mottled and birchen cochins. Oh and of course polish crested if they have some pretty bearded ones.

Well folks, I am really tired and I want to get plenty of sleep for tomorrow is promising to be filled with a lot of "Chickeny Goodness". Have a great evening and night everyone.
