Okies in the BYC The Original

I don't know if Peaches has come on here to rant and rave, but, last night something got into the yard and killed a guinea and a duck and injuried 2 other ducks. The way she babies her brood, I wouldn't want her to find out who or what did it. Not a pretty sight.

The guinea hen was one of the 2 that she bought for me last week. She sewed the ducks wounds with horse hair and put them inside the house in a storage tub. She was as mad as an old wet hen last night.

I bet you'll be going full-force in no time!

I have clarification from the administrator on what we can do concerning helping Bigokie.
We pretty much need to do this through private messaging.
The following is my question and Rob's reply.
Please do not question the rules on our thread concerning this matter. Whether you agree or disagree this is the rule. Rob did a good job in clarifying it so there is no reason for debate.
Donna (luvs2bememaw2) is coordinating the effort so either PM her or myself with questions or ideas.

Thanks everyone,
Monty

Hi Monty,

Thanks for your question. Unfortunately this falls under our rule regarding solicitations for donations / charity. We're sorry we have to draw such a rigid line, but after years of experience we've decided we have to disallow all fund raising or any other types of charitable requests. There are few main reasons:

1) Member Protection - There have been multiple times where members have been burned when trying to "do the right thing". We definitely aren't implying that this is one of those times, but our first obligation is to protect our members. Unfortunately this comes with the price of not being able to allow legitimate requests, but we've had to weigh the pros and cons and do what is best for our members.

2) Consistent Rule Enforcement / Setting A Precedent - We realized early that when we allowed one person (or group on behalf of a person or organization) to promote or receive charitable gifts / donations it opens up potential floodgates for other members to request the same. We'd end up with a ton of charity posts and then emails saying "Well, you let xxxx member ask / receive money for their problems / cause... why can't we!?".

Again, it hasn't been an easy decision but we're obligated to do what is best for the community as a whole, even if it unfortunately looks like we are blocking assistance to a person or group that needs help or is trying to offer help to others. Hopefully this doesn't come across as heartless or mean, but instead shows how much we know and care about the BYC community.

While we can't allow public donation requests / organizing, we won't prohibit members from privately discussing and helping... as long as it doesn't become spamming.

Thank you for being an engaged and caring member of our community. If you have any questions or need clarification on any of the above, just ask.

Monty - thank you for getting clarification on this for us. We want to be in compliance with the rules, but help however we can.

I am impressed with Queen Peaches' surgical skills. I have done a lot of cutting and bandaging on my animals and poultry, but never any stitching.

Hey, Carla, I went to a meeting of the Southwest Oklahoma Growers Association and a couple of the guys attended this and just raved about this stuff. I had actually toyed with the idea of going to it since I had read you and Gerald talking about it on here. Now I wish I had! This guy was very excited about the whole thing.

Next time I run into you and Gerald I'm going to have to pick your brains. Can you tell me about any good resources on it?

smile.png
Gerald will be happy to talk your ear off about the subject. I see that nnbreeder sent you the link to the plasticulture program. That link has lots of info.

Gerald wants to eventually buy the device that makes the rows, lays the plastic and drip tube. I think it costs around $4K for the machine though .... not sure how much the plastic & drip tube costs. He'd like to make that into a business ... laying plasticulture gardens for people. He'd better retire soon or cut out something else in his life because he doesn't even have enough time for all his the other fun things he does.

We signed up with the program last year and participants are limited to 3 years ... so after next year, we'll have to do it all on our own. I'm not positive, but I think they don't have any more room for new participants this year. Of course, you can alwlays do it all on your own and not have the government provide the resources.

One positive thing about plasticulture gardening ... if you accidentally kill some plants, or even if mother nature does .... it doesn't make you feel as bad as it does when chickens die or are killed. Oh, and there's far greater profit involved with growing & selling homegrown vegetables. We have yet to make a profit on raising chickens

Well Roy just left my house loaded down with roosters.
big_smile.png

If anyone wanted one of the roosters and couldn't come this way to get it, he will be taking them to Mary's for me in the morning.

How is everyone doing this afternoon?
smile.png

I get to go outside and play in chicken dust.
cool.png

I have to clean the small coop and let the Silkies and Serama's loose in there.
smile.png

They are getting too big for the brooder box.
hmm.png

I'm sure they will enjoy the extra space.
tongue.png

The dust makes me cough really bad.
sad.png

Anyone wanna come help me clean the coop.
roll.png

I'd offer to pay in roosters, but I am currently out of that form of currency.
big_smile.png

I guess I could pay you in eggs.
