I am impressed with Queen Peaches' surgical skills. I have done a lot of cutting and bandaging on my animals and poultry, but never any stitching.

Peaches has also sewn up a goat that almost severed a hoof, dogs that had been in fights and our horse that got pushed through a barbed wire fence by a stud horse. She is definately a country girl through and through. Who knows, maybe she missed her calling. I love my Queen Peaches. Doc

Gerald and I have plans to attend the Fletcher auction on Saturday night. Alslo, if nothing gets in our way of gathering some birds to sell ...we should bring some turkeys, chickens and hatching eggs to sell.

It sounds like several Okies are going to meet up at Mary's Swap meet in the morning? About what time? We might try to make it there to visit too.

Gerald & I took off work last night to get some things done at Lowe's in Shawnee for his rent house. So of course I talked him into running by the Maud auction. There were lots of goats & a good amount of birds for sale. Lots of bottle baby goats for sale ... selling as low as $11 each. I sure was tempted. Lots of baby chicks .... male chicks as low as 15 cents each. Prices seemed low on everything except the meat goats were selling good. Most good sized goats sold for around $100 each. We didn't stay for the chickens to be auctioned other than the first row where there where some show quality oegb for sale. They went for around $20 each. Oh, and the guy that sold the porcelain d'uccle hatching eggs to OSUkrazyKate was there. He had another dozen of those eggs for sale & I bid on them, but he PO'd & said he wanted $18 for the dozen.

Quenston .... have you seen these on the Joplin craigslist?

You know, you could do a lot of us addicts a favor & buy lots of these & save some for us to buy from you at an upcoming Okie get-together? http://joplin.craigslist.org/grd/1606880098.html

Hey, Carla, I went to a meeting of the Southwest Oklahoma Growers Association and a couple of the guys attended this and just raved about this stuff. I had actually toyed with the idea of going to it since I had read you and Gerald talking about it on here. Now I wish I had! This guy was very excited about the whole thing.

Next time I run into you and Gerald I'm going to have to pick your brains. Can you tell me about any good resources on it?

Gerald will be happy to talk your ear off about the subject. I see that nnbreeder sent you the link to the plasticulture program. That link has lots of info.

Gerald wants to eventually buy the device that makes the rows, lays the plastic and drip tube. I think it costs around $4K for the machine though .... not sure how much the plastic & drip tube costs. He'd like to make that into a business ... laying plasticulture gardens for people. He'd better retire soon or cut out something else in his life because he doesn't even have enough time for all his the other fun things he does.

We signed up with the program last year and participants are limited to 3 years ... so after next year, we'll have to do it all on our own. I'm not positive, but I think they don't have any more room for new participants this year. Of course, you can alwlays do it all on your own and not have the government provide the resources.

One positive thing about plasticulture gardening ... if you accidentally kill some plants, or even if mother nature does .... it doesn't make you feel as bad as it does when chickens die or are killed. Oh, and there's far greater profit involved with growing & selling homegrown vegetables. We have yet to make a profit on raising chickens

It would be wonderful if Gerald could turn this into a service that he can sell to others. I think that we are seeing more and more people want to know where their food comes from and what has been sprayed on it. I keep picking up the cherry and grape tomatoes at the grocery store, reading that the country of origin isn't the USA and putting them back on the shelf. I will pay more for a fruit or vegetable grown in the USA and even more for something grown in Oklahoma.

I also understand the concept of wanting to find something that makes money from your property instead of consuming time and money with no current profit. I think that I am about ready to downsize everything and consider my saved time to be saved money. I may rethink that however when I see if any additional maran eggs hatched today.

Have you every tried wearing one of those paper masks with the ventilation filter in the middle? I can't breath well enough with a solid paper mask, but have to wear a mask when doing major cleaning in the coop or I am unable to breath for several days afterwards. When I see how filthy the paper mask is, I realize how much it kept out of my lungs. If you buy them a dozen at a time at a paint supply store, they are much less expensive than if you buy them one at a time at the hardware store.

It'll just be a matter of time before Gerald talks me into buying one of those tools to do the plasticulture garden. He's mentioned several times that he'd like to help others ... till gardens, etc. He loves growing veggies.

I keep saying I'm going to downsize on the critters ... but then Gerald is selling all our extra eggs at work & he has quite a large following of groupies addicted to fresh eggs & then of course the fresh veggies in the summer. I just wish we had more time to take care of everything ... and it would be great to have a veggie stand at the house. Home grown veggies and farm fresh eggs are so much better tasting than what you get at the grocery store.

Maribeth, I think it's probably too late for you to get any more chicks from those marans eggs .... they should have hatched earlier this week. I hope you have better luck with the other eggs. I could collect more for you, if you want?

how did you manage to get a rare breed like Dorkings at Atwoods? I am impressed.

Sometimes all the stars line up and things happen, I tried last year to hatch a few Dz and only got 2 out of about 36 eggs and they died
So today I got all they had..Of course I am hoping for 12 girls.

It could happen
