But that isn't why I own them now days. They are good meat birds. Animals must have a practical purpose on our place now or off they go, one way or another.

We have some beautiful geese we will be taking to Fletcher on Sat. They are gorgeous out on the pond, but we don't really have a hankering to eat them so to the sale they go.

I cant believe how chilly it is in the morning and then warm in the later evening... its causing our chickens to be restless...

Our meat birds seem to be short fat lil things.. hey just like me... but are still trying to feather out... is that normal.. they are over two months now...

Last night I was checking out my cochin chicks and I see that the two darkest have started to develope curled pin feathers. I don't want frizzle cochins but it will be fun to watch them develope. If I am lucky I may get a pair to sell or swap.
I say it every day but I sure do like Chickens and you peeps sure do make it even more fun. It has been a Terrible week at work and I've come down with a cold but no worries here - Chicken Therapy, as good as chocolate and less fattening. (I'm not eating MY birds, though I heard they have alot of good meat for a less than 2lb. bird) No, no, no, they have such sweet personalities like puppies.
My second coop arrived by Fed Ex this week and my husband (who works swing shift right now) decided to cheer me up by putting it together while I was at work. It is too big to carry thru the door so he had to build it in the pen. First he had to catch a little Millie Cochin pullet and Jasper, the head roo, also a Millie. DH said Jasper gave him quite a hard time when he tried to catch him. I wish I could have seen that.
DH said when the coop was done he let the pair back in the pen and they walked right in it, Jasper first, as if the already owned the place.
I have decided to name my two Partridge Cochin Pullets Thelma and Louies. They refuse to go in the coop at night on their own.They want to roost on the roof peak. All the others took less than a week of me putting them in and closing the door for them to go in on their own at dusk. I wonder if when it gets below freezing they will go in on their own?

LOL hey Buster!! I know they are good for meat, I was just razzing the others that are trying to convert me!! I have more than I can take care of now! I need to get to the point where I eat some of what I raise but I just haven't gotten there yet.

Quail are fun - they are quick to hatch, jump around like popcorn and mature quickly. That said, I could never figure out how to get enough meat off of the Pharoah quail (coternix) to justify the effort of cleaning them. Sort of like cleaning sun fish or small perch - by the time they are cleaned, there isn't much left to eat. The eggs make cute deviled eggs for a party tray, although they are a pain to peel and the one time I made a tray of them, folks thought they were too "pretty" to eat (bunch of cowards
