MM you confuse me. I thought you had a good strain of buckeye but you state that by spring you will be hatching a good strain! What are you doing? ARe you combining two lines or what? I am interested as I am trying to learn about breeding.

•Some poultry breeders use Line Breeding with their chickens. A more complicated, yet more effective way to line breed is to Spiral Breed. To do this, maintain three lines - Line A, Line B, Line C.

•2 For Season 1, mate all males to females of their own line. Daughters of Season 1 are added as breeders to the line that produced them (they stay with their mothers.) Sons are compared to their fathers for quality.

•3 In Season 2, mate the C line male to the B line females, mate the B line male to the A line females, mate the A line male to the C line females - rotating them.

•4 Females from Season 2 are added to the line that produced them alongside their mothers. The best son of the C line male mated to the B line females is kept and mated to the B line females; same for other matings, old cocks are retired.

•5 Flock of large fowl Buckeye chickens.Once the system is up and running, males are used twice, then retired in preference to a son. Males rotate one line over every other year. This gives you a year of outcross and a year of line breeding

I was stuck on Rhode Island reds and Plymouths when I began this farm as they were the only chickens I ever had any exerience with as a kid. Then good ol P&B and Muesky came along and enabled me at Blanchard auction. Then Al came and pawned his beautiful rooster off on me. (and I do mean pawned in a very good way.) If its ok for a man to love a bird Expecially a cock bird I think it was love at first sight. (If its not ok then sue me...) after spending some time with my Buckeyes. I knew I had to have more. His rooster was the friendliest bird I have ever seen. He followed me everywhere I went. So after researching the breed and contacting every breeder in Oklahoma and coming up empty. (In case you didn't know it theres only 2 souces of breeders minus myselfin Oklahoma. one is Bill braden Which I wont comment on But you can feel free to PM me and we can discuss his birds. and A lady in seminole Oklahoma which has very reputable feedback. After my search to find the best breeder checking BYC and Google I finally rested with David Puthoff in Ohio,
http://www.buckeyechickens.com/ After joining The American Buckeye Poultry Club and having my first trio shipped. the search began for my Flock. I now can comfortably say I have some of the best stock avalible in the buckeye world in Oklahoma.
I am meeting a few Breeders at shawnee to pick up some other very outstanding Breeds to include several very very high dollar Cornish Birds. I try my best to make it a point to make sure my birds come from very reputable sources. With the exeption of my Cute little foo foo cochin birds. who are for my familys liking and not for any serious breeding programs or shows.

I know! I know! I got all the testing and banding done, but for the life of me I can't seem to make the decisions and fill out the darn entry form.

I think I've decided to have the kids enter as Jrs since this show is so big. I told them they could each do 5 birds. DD just got a new pullet that's really nice and with another pair she already has will round out a nice trio of blue Silkies. Other options for her are a black cockerel (young but nice), a black hen (some fading in her beard) or a pair of whites (cock and pullet) she picked up with the blues. The white cock is great, I'm worried about keeping him clean though. He's our first foray into whites. The white pullet is young, timid and a bit small right now. In a month though.....?

For DS I said he should do his 2 Sumatras and 3 of his Ameraucanas, but which 3 Ameraucanas is the problem there.

If I could just send in the entry with 5 Silkies, 2 Sumatras and 3 Ameraucanas in Jrs and a copy of my VS 9-2 without the sex, variety, age and band number we'd be set.

Happy B-day you 2. Well it looks like I got myself into a horrible mess. I guess the buckeye chick peeped so loud he woke up gerald and OKcarla's eggs and they decided to follow suit early. I was prepared for my 25 chicks to hatch but um......... 115 chick darn it looks like its time to dust off the ancient janeway brooder from the hay barn and get it purring. silly birds pipping 2 days early.......

Congrats on the payoff!!! I know how great that is.......or how great it was.

You will be rowdy without anyone there. I know they started a list of who would be there a few pages back.
