Yall are full of it........ I need to put carl on here, he will tell you it is the woman. If it wasnt for me he would stand in a spot most of the day trying to remember what is was he was going to do and how he had planned on doing it.....

Just brought in a tiny black silkie babe hatched by the Moms in the big pen. High vaulted skull, good toes. I've just let 'em do their thing and they don't even use nest boxes. Not really a good way to do it, and not what I usually do. My black/lav split Showgirl is the Papa, and he's had 10 hens, which is too many for a silkie, so I've expected few fertile eggs. Five of the hens are on eggs, and only one has hatched before this one. It was put out of the nest before I got there and didn't make it. This one has good LUNGS! I'll be watching closely for more.

Split Socket sold me some nice cages for growout pens, and we're retrofitting the small greenhouse to accommodate half of them. He's really a great guy! It would take me forever to do a shoddy version of what he's accomplishing!! I have to alter the cages, as they were used for canaries and the guy who built them put the galvanized pans INSIDE. Have to undo one end, slide 'em out, and build a base for each cage to sit on. The cages have bottoms, so it isn't too hard. Gotta go get materials to build the bases.

Then I'll be set up to do something somewhat similar to what you've been discussing for growout pens!
