Hey country
I have had cats my whole married life. At one point I had 13 housecats. All spayed, neutered and declawed. My oldest was 19 when she died... my youngest 13. There are all kinds of debates about this issue and I believe that Hollywood CA. has actually made an ordinance against it. I have 4 cats here, now and all are declawed. I have had some declawed younger and some declawed older. I have never had a problem. It will save your carpet and furniture for sure... although it probably won't help with your christmas tree issues! Cats are naturally tree climbers and dangling ornament batters. My best defense against that is a squirt gun and if ya get desperate fill it with vinegar. That should slow them down a little. They tend to outgrow the whole tree thing, although my 19 year old batted ornaments on the lower branches until she died! Try to fnd a vet who uses superglue instead of stitches,. The surgery is less complicated and the recovery time shorter. Don't give up! Cats can be trained...or diven into some kind of submission. (they hate to admit that... but it's true)
Good luck.

Another alternative is a glue on cover for the claws which we have used in the past with success. Just trim the claw short and glue the covers on. As the claw grows back out though it will push the cover off so replacement is needed but it's not frequent. The wife got them from a mail order company, I don't remember which one though.

We had one male de-clawed years ago and he could climb trees very well and was a ferocious rabbit hunter. Defended his territory too and kept cats much larger then he was at bay.

I spend hours pouring through research on the 'net. If you try it just be sure to type in chickens after Naked Neck or I won't be responsible what pops up!!

Yeah... once I was looking for toy dachsunds. My friends Mom had 2 of them and I haven't seen them since and that was 30 years ago. I searched high and low on the web... then as a last resort I typed in "teeny weenies"... yeah...ya never wanna do THAT.

So sorry to hear of your kitty trouble. We have one totally indoor cat and 5 mostly outdoor cats and none are declawed. We have some rough cedar posts in our house that we allow our cats to scratch on along with some scratching posts. Most of the cats have learned to use them instead of furniture. If I catch one scratching on anything else, they are scolded and then taken to the cedar post and shown how much more fun it is to scratch on it. I also trim the nails of the indoor cat (when he's sleeping on my lap) so that he doesn't need to scratch as often.

Here's a pic of my house kitty Simon. He's a scottish fold that we found at the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter a year ago. We wouldn't dare let him out of our house, and he doesn't even want to go outside, thank goodness. For some reason, we've had bad luck with people "finding" our pets and calling either to ask if we had a reward or letting us know that they took them & then never calling back. (OK, it's only happened 3 times now). Hopefully my big barking dogs will deter any more people from helping themselves.

Country :

Sorry to hear your cats are destroying your home, It is what they do, When my DD was just 6 she aked me Daddy could I have a kitty kat, it took 1 millisecond for her to crack my hard shell and get to the soft center. Then I laid the law down on declawing and having her spayed, Knowing their destructive nature it was the only insurance. The thing that gets me is I watch these girls watch this cat do something they think is so cute or funny, which also includes the cat breaking some irreplacable family heirloom, yea that is really cute now isn't it. The cat now is for the most part just fine now she does not even jack around with our christmas things, heck you may ( on a good day ) find it sitting in my lap, but don't let that out!!!. Cats cannot!!!! be trained but they can be trained to live in fear of destroying your things, So Cammie do the responsible thing for your cat and your quality of life and have it declawed you will really feel better for it, oh and by the way if you have her spayed she will really mellow out and turn into a cat to really love because they are easier to live with.

( OK off my soap box now ) Thanks for letting me vent.

Thanks so much everyone! I'm kinda suprised at how many people have cats! And thank you for sharing the pictures. We get all of ours spayed or neutered, and keep them up to date on shots. I'm such a sucker when it comes to rescuing, that's where every cat I've ever had has come from. Right now our oldest is about a year old, the other about 6 months.

They've never bothered anything, until the tree. The 'water bottle method' has always worked first time, but with the tree I think they thought it was a game. I've NEVER had a cat bother the Christmas tree; they usually just sleep under it. I'm thinking they will grow out of it, they are both still kittens. But we will definitely be looking into all of the options to stop the scratching. Thanks again.

We found O'Malley in the alley behind our house this September, and brought Beckham in from my old neigbors barn last winter after he was stepped on by a horse.

OMG! Thomas O'Malley the alley cat. He is the coolest cat! Him and the Pink Panther! (before he talked). Two kitties and a bunny... country that is the sweetest thing!

Thanks Henny. Ya, when the kitten's in trouble my husband calls him Thomas. *ha* He's never seen Aristocats, so I had to explain it to him.

Did anyone else see where hundreds of baby budgies were found at the side of a road? I want to adopt them all!

Who all will be at Shawnee? Only a few weeks away! I should be able to go in the morning, still waiting for the final decision though.
