So Monty, what did you decide on the Giant Reds as for a starting cross? I hope I will be able to come to the POOP Meet, if I do I may bring some eggs to trade, and will definitely bring some food, Lynn

Monty what about crossing a standard Shamo or Siapan over some white Rock or Giant hens? That should bring you a good meat bird. And you know someone with some nice big Oriental Games.

As far as the NPIP thing goes if I can be there I will bring the supplies with me and test birds on site. Then you can add them to an existing flock.

I hope you can be there!

That is SO TRUE! I bought a handsome white silkie roo at the Shawnee Poultry show that doesn't have a comb whatsoever. He definitely crows though and acts like a boy.

Henny,
You aren't supposed to tell him about the new babies until the day before they are supposed to arrive. At that point?????? I used to order chicks every fall and scheduled their arrival for the week my husband went hunting in Wyoming. What he doesn't know, won't annoy him.

ETA: I have 25 Siapan Jungle Fowl pullets due to arrive the week of April 15. When all is said and done, I know my husband won't really care. But, he likes to roll his eyes about the crazy things I do, so I don't plan to mention them until the night before their arrival, when I explain why the phone is going to ring at 5:30 in the morning.

This boy came from the Jones auction. Those are full grown Turkeys he is looking eye to eye with and a bantam hen standing at his feet.

Just click on the pic to enlarge.

Monty, I looked at this very educational explanation of chicken genetics. It is WAY above my interest and ability to comprehend.

It might make more sense to you - particularly if you are still on pain meds when you review it.
