What kind of hens are you looking for, we live close enough to work something out.

AL

Right now, I would just love hens that are laying, im not picky!

By the way where do you guys do the swap and when, I would so love to talk about chickens to people who also love them. My DH hates the whole idea!

POOPS

Ok, I need some serious input. Either post your thoughts here or send me a PM if you are more comfrotable with that.

We have looked at four places to have the "POOPS" event.
Blanchard, Lexington, Lake Thunderbird and possibly Choctaw.
This is what I know.

We asked for different criteria and input.
1. We need a place where we can have chickens. Ideally a place where the birds can be out of the weather and safe from predators at night.
2. We need a place with some type of building to be out of the weather.
3. We need a place that allows smokers and cookers.
4.We need a place that is clean enough to have food served there.
5.We also wanted a place that has RV hookups close by if possible.

Here is a breakdown of what we have found out.
1. Blanchard: We have had little or no feedback about using this facility and have basically ruled it out unless something changes.

2. Lake Thunderbird is out except if some folks want to camp out there. We can't have chickens at all in the state park.
It is about 20 miles to Lexington from the lake but driving back and forth would be disruptive.

3. Lexington: It shows the most promise. There is a building for the birds and for us to be out of the weather. However it is not a real clean place (dirt floor) when it comes to setting up for eating. Plus there are no tables. We woiuld have to provide these.
There is space in the parking lot to park RV's but no hookups. There are hookups at the Lake, about 15 to 20 miles away.
There would also be space to set up cookers and smokers.
The man is offering this free of charge although we should probably offer to pay him something.
Also He had asked if we wanted to have a special auction with the event and if we would like to have outside people come.
He doesn't seem to mind either way.
This has been discussed and we decided we didn't want it open to the general public but it was ok for us to invite our family and friends. Especially those that might want to be part of out group.
The auction building is out in the country not far from Lexington.
I have heard it is hard to find. I have never been there so I don't know.
4. KOA Campground near I-40 and Choctaw Road.
I stopped in here yesterday and had a very nice chat with the manager.
This is a very nice KOA campgroud with all of the hookups plus cabins to rent. It is located about a mile north of I-40 and about 10 miles East of Miwdwest City. There is a pool but It probably won't be open at the time of our event.
There is a very nice Log Cabin building for eating and being in out of any bad weather. (Heat or AC) It also has a kitchen.
There is a nice area where cookers and smokers can be used.
The lady told me that chickens would be OK but she would have to double check with the owners to be sure. She told they have people with horses and other livestock that stay there and she didn't see why chickens would be a problem.
I do think we would have to put the chickens in an area that would not be right where we are doing the cooking and hanging out.
Not far away but just not right together.
It would cost $200 for the building for the day plus those staying would have to pay for their camping spots.
There is no place out of the weather and that is secure from predators for the night.
I don't know how many people would planning on spending the night. There are also motels available in Midwest City (ten miles) and Shawnee (20 miles).
There are also eating places and truck stops not too far away.
So that is what I know so far.

Please, Please, Please!
Tell me what you guys think will be the best and what you want to do. Ask questions. Cuss and Discuss. Just let me know.
I am going to call the KOA campgroud tomorrow and I will probably follow up with Lexington as well.
If anyone has any more info on Blanchard, please let us know.
We need everyone's help in making POOPS the best it can be.

I know I saw a few Saipans, I had no idea what they were and had to be told, but the few that I have seen at sales, always did real well. I believe the roos went around 15, and i dont recall exactly but I think the pullets were 17ish and up. Of course I have no idea what the market price is for them, so I dont know if thats good or not.

Monty even though Lexington would be further away for me I would have to vote for it. Here we have a guy that doesn't know most of us offering his place for nothing. Just can't beat good Southern hospitality!!

Darn...I am with nnbreeder and it is really far for me...the KOA campground sounds nice as well though...I really got to go with Lexington...there is a lake near by!

I must admit that I did the deed...Henny couldn't bring herself to do it and being the galant gentleman I am I offed the fool! On the other hand I did give 2 other roos a whole flock of flussies!

Don't worry Monty...as long as you behave you are safe...we hit what we aim at! Silly cop charged me with wreckless discharge...hit that dern skunk between the eyes! No lie on that a buddy did it at Stillwater while in college!!!

Grey - I did the same foolish things as you...

Curious if anyone one would be interested in any rats or mice at the swap...I will breed if there is an interest...lots cheaper than ones at the pet store! Calm down Monty they are for feeding to snakes and such...nobody ask what is on the pit just eat it and be happy

Well spending the night is not in the cards for us, we will drive over where ever spend a few hours and drive home. To many things going on and no one else that can help.
I would just like to see a clean place to eat and meet everyone..
