Sheds make awsome coops, but i aint willing to shell out the 2-4k for the ones i like at lowes for a chicken coop and cant find ayone selling one close enough. I gotta get around to building a nice big coop for bantams. I started buying some wood, will slowly accumulate the materials so i dont shell out a ton of money at once. Anyone got any plans for a coop? One that is fairly simple for my wife to make?

Ronnie, a friend of mine bought a 12x12 metal building at sears when they had them on sale, he put a plywood floor in it then covered it with lanolium(spelling), then put foam insulation on the walls and covered them with lanolium. I didnt think it would be that nice, but it has turned out to be extremely cheap i think he has less that 400 in it now. I think I will do that for my next coop.

I am seriously considering gettin the 10x8 metal shed at lowes and using it for the bantam orps and rocks. How do you apply a foam insulation, never seen it used before. My current coop was already here when i bought the place and its just 2x4s and sheet metal and i dont have issues with frostbite.

Grace, as cold as it is, they are biding there times in those eggs. I wouldnt worry, maybe your count was off a day. Put on some hannah montana and they will be doing there best to get outa that room.

Would love to have some rain. I am pretty sure the wheat field behind my house is toast. It's crunchy.... I have been hosing out my chicken run once a week. Sick of waiting... water heater is in... hubby, albeit accident-prone... is awesome! I just got done doing chickens and it is windy and COLD... I busted my heat lamp in the coop... really only use it when it hits low 20s or teens... jeez... hens will be ticked and have to huddle... I have one in my south coop. Maybe should move it and put hennies all in one coop.... Hens.... no wonder I'm on medication.... next week it'll be 90 and they will be drooping....

Ok folks i am back from a day of getting feed and groceries and doing ten loads of laundry at the laundrymat because our washer won't spin and I didn't want to stand on the back porch in freezing cold and wring out wet clothes to put in the dryer, Just want to set the story straight!!!! I PREFERR RED HEADS, and I will do my best to be at the POOPS, I will worn ya though I can take what I dish out, I was trained by some of the meanest red heads in the states of Oklahoma and Texas!!!! How about a old school bus or old mobile home for a chicken coop, I have seen some real nice chicken coops built outa old mobile homes. Part of mine are in a loafing shed partitioned off to make pens and it works great, I also use wooden pallets to build what I think are really great pair and trio pens, could use them for walls to build a coop also, Lynn

OK...they say it's supposed to be 18 degrees here tonight...soooo... put all hens in north coop...(needless to say they were thrilled

) went to move broken lightbulb and it worked... moved dang hens for nothing.... did I mention I was on medication?

Grace... best of luck with your hatch.... I sure wouldn't wanna come out of a toasty egg in this weather....

Oceanseve--

We don't have access to a digital camera at the moment, or I'd do it in a heartbeat. I can tell you what we did, though--5-gallon buckets on a shelf on one wall for nest boxes, with a 2x4 in front for a rail, and pallets leaned against the other walls for roosts. I just knocked most of the slats out. Scavenge, scavenge, scavenge...MacGyver, you've taught me well.

Actually, I went down the road collecting long branches to use for roosts 'till my husband brought home the pallets. They're chickens, right? How picky could they be?

Hope that helps.
