To be honest I go to these auctions not so much to buy and sell as I do to look and learn. there is a great opportunity to learn breed types, and also to ID some problems that I never see in my own flock. I will buy if I see a must have bird or if the prices are right. Last yr during the heat of the summer months it was a buyers market, with prices being very low. But then again what else is there to do on a Saturday night in SW OK LOL LOL.

We went to the monroe auction last night and picked up another 2DZ aruaucanas eggs, it was a sellers market for sure, we seen 3 week old RIR go for 4.50 each, and even most of the roos were in the 8 to 9 dollar range some less but all in all a good auction. maybe 150 or 200 people
no place to sit. seen a wooden homemade bator sell for 25.00 it should have went for more, but the fan was going out..I would have picked it up for me but with my Truck still broken it was to big for the car.
I will see how the turn out will be in a couple of weeks.. On the up side I sold 30 chicks this morning to a local feed store and he said that he would want more after my next hatch.. so that is a step in the right direction, If I could get a couple of more (Well you know the rest of the story).

We are working on the room addition and waitting for Cubanlongtails to call so we can meet up with her.
We are giving her our silkies and a couple of Fizzle Roo's and some Orloff eggs for her trouble to bring mine and teach's pigeons and roo this far out of her way.
well better go back to work or it may have to wait until next weekend..always something to look forward to..

We all have been scratching our heads trying to figure out auction prices and timing it just right. I think one option for the crazyiness is that I have been hearing more and more this year, that the commercial hatchery's are all falling way behind in their orders and cancelling alot of orders due to all kinds of goofy excuses, some are pushing back orders for 2 mo or more, especially for the more popular breeds. Those of us that hatch and sell have seen a big benefit from this. That is my humble opinion, I think LOL.

Who is bringing what.

Those that are traveling a ways maybe could do paper and plastic ware.

Breads and chips. There will be a Loves right at the exit off I-40 to get

ice and such if needed. There is a WalMart just about 15 miles from this

exit on I40 in Shawnee. There is also a WalMart off I-240 and I-40 from

the west in OKC.

The only problem with buying grown birds from my viewpoint, is that you don't know how they have been fed during their growing period. It is my understanding that chicks fed too much calcium during the first 12 weeks for instance, may have damaged kidneys and not be good layers. This would happen if someone fed all their birds egg layer instead of feeding chick starter to the younger birds.

On the other hand, I have about come to the conclusion that by the time you feed that cute $3 chick for 6 months until it starts laying, you have added another $12 or more in feed, so hens should be worth $15 - provided they are laying and don't have health issues.

Al - your calculation on the price of feed per dozen eggs was very helpful. Have you ever calculated how much feed it takes to raise 6 chicks to 6 months old?

Both hubby and I have been working quite a bit of overtime, which leaves precious little time to spend in the evenings (and precious energy for us, too!) with our birds. Today, I'm home and took my chair in the pen to feed some bread and relax with the 'girls' and their 'men', and noticed a couple of them with watery eyes and seeming to have some trouble seeing!

What could this be? I know I am suffering allergies with itchy eyes and blowing nose....could they be suffering from all the high winds blowing dirt around?

What could I give them to help?

I wish I would of know about it, I still have roosters to sale and a few chicks coming up. And eggs.
I hope if and when I go it will be good then.
I'm wanting to build some more coops and need the $$ to go into it.

I got back from Pryor about 10:30 this morning. I picked me up 3 pair of silkies. Very nice birds. I pair of whites, 1 pair of splashed and 1 pair of showgirl whites.
I am happy with them. Ronnie I am going to be contacting you soon I have an idea you may be interested in.
It was a good show with lots of good birds. I did manage to visit with some friends I have not seen in 15 years.
Ah, the sound of a chicken show it was like music to me.
