GB, congrats on the Wellie pip. I loaded up my incubator but only have 3 wellie eggs in there. Can't wait for April Fools fuzzy butts. Sorry bout your bunny baby

I am going to talk to my DH about the Poops thing, but he always says no to everything, so I ain't getting my hopes up. LOL

I think I want to get some speckled sussex. I have had them before and we loved em. What do yall think?

Kinda an emergency - We have a young Old English Hen
that is egg bound - we have inserted warmed mineral oil
as far as we possibly can. Bill says the egg is past her
hip joints, but we're not getting anywhere.....Help quick,
if you have any suggestions.........

According to the Chicken Health Book by Gail Damerow on P. 54
"An egg travels down the oviduct pointed end first. When it gets to the urogenital chamber of the cloaca, it turns end for end so it will come out large end first. Sometimes an egg gets stuck. The egg may be too large (for example, if a pullet lays unusually large eggs), or a disease may cause the oviduct to swell or its muscles to become partially paralyzed. The stuck egg then causes future eggs to accumulate behind it, distending the hen's abdomen. Unless you can get things moving again, the hen will die.
Lubricate a forefinger with mineral oil or KY Jelly and insert it into the vent. With your other hand, push gently against the hen's abdomen to force the egg toward the vent. If you can see the egg, but it is too big to push through the vent, puncture the shell and remove it in pieces (with great care not to let a sharp shard injure the hen). Rinse the cloaca with hydrogen peroxide.
If the egg was stuck in the cloaca too long, cloacal tissue may protrude through the vent. In that case, protect the hen from cannibalism by isolating her until her muscle tone is back to normal."

Thanks soooo much.....sounds like we're doing everything
we can, shy of breaking the shell, for now. This is her first
egg, and we're scared to death to break the shell and tear
something. She seems to be trying to 'take two' and,
hopefully, things will "move" soon. I've already told her,
"Honey, blow it across the liviingroom, I'll clean it up and
won't say a word."

We've both helped pull calves, colts, and kid goats, but this is a
"whole nuther ballgame".

Appreciate your input.

I have been reading some of the posts regarding eggbound hens in the chicken health section of Backyard Chickens. The only other thing I have seen suggested is a warm bath to help her relax her muscles and giving her some crushed Tums for the added calcium while she is trying to pass this egg.

Hey guys! Haven't had time to post in awhile, but I've been trying to keep up with what is going on here in the Okie thread. I would love to make it to the POOPS gathering, but kidding season starts for me at the end of the month and I'll be busy with bottle feeding baby goats.
Anyway, I've got quite a few breeds that I'll be offering hatching eggs from very soon. I thought I'd let my fellow Okies have a chance to get on the waiting lists first...

All of the stock used for hatching eggs are either SQ, or from breeders of quality stock...not hatchery stock. I'm currently doing test hatches on some breeds, and will have chicks available as well.

People Of Oklahoma Poultry Swap April 25th 2009 I-40 and Chactow KOA camp.

This is just an informal get together of our group here and their family and frineds. We can bring birds to sell/trade/swap.



Those that are traveling a ways maybe could do paper and plastic ware. Breads and chips. There will be a Loves right at the exit off I-40 to get ice and such if needed. There is a WalMart just about 15 miles from this exit on I40 in Shawnee. There is also a Walmart off I-240 and I-40 from the west in OKC.

Very good Dandi, it is fun to watch them after they hatch. AS SOON as this cold spell is over these 44 here that hatched last weekend are going to the OUTSIDE brooder. And the next batch is getting either a layer of baking soda or kitty litter on the bottom poop catcher tray.

PoultryandBees - Thanks again for sticking it out with us
through labor and delivery last night.........LOL We had
done the mineral oil and then I cut my little fingernail and
got a blob of vasoline and inserted that and rubbed it all
around the end of the egg. Bill applied pressure in
downward strokes until we could see the end of it.
Finally, about 11:00 - touchdown. For some reason,
her first egg was extremely wide. Hope she never does this
again. Imagine if she could talk, she'd agree 100%.

Ahhhhhhhhhh........life on the farm........
