I do see the sun shining today, YEAAAAAAAAAA I am so sick of all that rain, I know come August will be begging for it but for now I am happy. Still to wet out to do anything. I think Lynn and I are going to scope out a new area for the chicken coop. When we 1st built it there it was perfect there WAS grass there to help hold the rain but now it is nothing but a mud hole. Maybe build a new one in a new place and then rotate.

I am doing just this... I have a large coop that is off the ground a bit. A small creek is in front of it and it sits in the trees with a bridge. (sounds nicer hen it is) However my big chickens all do not roost and some of the little guys do not either. My silkie pair from poops will NOT go in at all. So im going to build a smaller coop near and a large one down by the garden. We have the room (13 acres) so why not I guess.
You all post faster then I can read. My littles ones keep me busy all day and by night I go to bed with them. Im not trying to be rude but butting in....
Carla or anyone will my turkey stay around here alone or should I get another or will that even help ?

Beth I do know that when we lost our hen turkey to a bobcat my tom was lonely and he finally went off with the wild turkeys. Do not know if it was just the timing and if my hen was still here she would have left with them also.

My turkeys and guineas have always stayed close to home, but I think it is because there are several of them. Friends who have had guineas leave, lost them because they joined up with another flock.
We used to have wild turkeys running in a creekbed, just a few blocks from us (but separated by a housing addition). Although I got lots of calls from people telling me that "my turkeys" were running down the creek bed - my Narragansett turkeys never left my yard. One of the hens that was part wild turkey would fly across the street to visit one of my Narragansett Toms who was in a different yard, but then she would go off and set her nest in the neighbor's front bushes. She never strayed very far.

In my experience with turkeys (since 2001) they are very social creatures and will stay at home where they are fed - if they have friends at home.

Last summer, when I depopulated every chicken, guinea and turkey other than my pet Narragansett, he mourned the loss of his friends. He was lost without anyone with whom to interact, since he was the only poultry left that was free ranging. I don't know which of the poultry he missed, since he had been roosting by himself and generally ignored the turkey hens if there was a person around that he could strut for.

Each of the poultry breeds makes different noises, so I think it is comforting to them to have someone who makes a noise similar to their own (male and female turkeys, guineas, chickens, and peacocks all make different sounds)

You probably can wait and see if your turkey is sufficiently bonded with the chickens that it doesn't feel lonely. Since you are raising them all together, they are going to feel like family to each other, even if they are different sizes and make different sounds.

Yeah everyone is awake! She is feeling alittle better but seems to have a temp still. She said her head still hurts and I am getting a headache, hoping it is from lack of sleep.

There is no sunshine here! I want sun shine. I got my outside chores done, now I am working on the inside. Might as well get something done if i have to stay home.

Guess maybe I will wait and see on my turkey... When can you tell if its a tom... Im guessing its a hen from watching how it moves and acts...
Have a good day. Im off to the feed store...
