Yes they are Heirloom tomato's, haven't had as good of luck with them here in the Oklahoma desert, the Japanese beatles really like them though. I plan to plant 20 Roma plant's for canning, we do about 10 Qt cases every yr.

yes!!! you can have up to a 600w cone in a 20amp closed circut, so that is pretty powerful without any electrical risk's. I would only use a higher rated porcelin socket base though, and heavier gage wire as well. My concern lay's in making a close fitting wire mess protector for it, I think I can work it out.

Japanese beatles show up around the time they start to turn red, and feed only at night so in the morning you think and it looks as though birds are getting your mators. I use dawn dish soap and some epson salt shaken up in a windex bottle, spray on everyday and they never come back, this mixture mask the smell of the ripening tomato which they can detect from over a mile away.

They would do fine in salsa I would think, I prefer a stronger fleshier tomato for salsa though, the weep less water after you add your salt, so the salsa is thicker/chunkier.

I have an electrical contractor I work with often who might be able to get them, but online should be cheaper and more reliable. I don't really know of any local sources Don.

I found them when I was doing a search for heating elements, I wanted to try something diffent with my wooden bator..I think some kind of reflector would work with it..maybe even a coffee can it does need some type of shield.

Don :

I agree with the shield idea, but I think an open tight metal weave like 1/4" hardware cloth would work great as a shield. Because I like to have the fan blowing across the element in order to provide a more constant flow of even heat, as opposed to a solid shield that would be more one directional and create hot spots.

When I set my early girls I add a 1/4 cup of sugar to the hole, they come out sweet as can be and the skins are not as tough.
