Okies in the BYC The Original

Years ago we hatched some Pheasants out, some of those giant Ringnecks. As it was summer time Teva set up a brooder outside for them, one of the ones out of a stacked brooder. When she put the little ones in there the bars didn't even slow them down. For days I heard cheeping in the tall grass but could never find any of them.

Yesterday while coming home from town I do believe we saw either one of the originals or some of their offspring. Teva said that cock bird was huge. It was about two miles from the house.

Oh Grace and Cleo I am so sorry about your losses! We have been fortunate(if that is what you want to call it) We loose more birds to neighbors dogs than to predators(coons and such). With the dogs, they get a warning shot then no more chicken killing doggie.

On the wry neck thing, John has had a stiff neck since Thursday do you think I could get him down and give him vitamins would he straighten up?? He has suffered all weekend long so I am driving him to the chiropractor tomorrow as soon as I can get out of work.

OKay, I boughy some chicks from Carla at Shawnee in December, they are now HUGE!! I know she said they was cucko marans but I have a couple of questions. Both are barred. One has white earlobes and one doesn't. the red earlobed one has feathers on it's legs. So does cuckos have white or red earlobes and how do I tell if they are boys or girls. I have heard neither of them crow, and shouldn't they by now if they was gonna?

That pattern is basically a barred bird in which the barring doesn't match. The Marans have not yet been standardized here in the US so some breeders are working on more then one type of bird. The feather legged are supposed to be like the French birds yet some are leaning twords the clean legged variety for standardization. Didn't help much did I?

Dang! I sure have missed a bunch. With the wife at home she keeps me hopping! Did get some good yard work done...and the garage is workable again...until I do somethng in it

Buckguy - yup you can use chick starter...I do it on occasion as there is only one feed store around that will get me game bird feed...real nice gal that works there will protect it for me! less than five foot tall and five foot wide...wouldn't want her mad at me for nothing

Nana- I learned with a single shot .410 as well! Might be expensive but that is what my boys are learning on as well. Still prefer it for rabbit hunting. I even take pheasant with it...don't have to wait for them to fly so far away when they rise close!

I don't care what you folks think...I win the run people away game!

If someone gets the chance, could you run out here and teach me how to use a calender and write down hatch dates

I have 6 showgirls and silkies w/showgirl genes that all hatched in the same two days and they are different sizes it is really strange. The showgirls are definatly smaller then the silkie mixes.

I got silkies that day from Carla also, mine are different sizes, I also wasn't giving vit., since starting vit, they are all growing faster. One of the white ones and the partridge are smaller than the rest.

I am back!

I hear the advice about this calender thing...just not getting through to the gry mater though. i think it might be a genetic issue or I am liking this talk about vitamins. Is there a vitamin deficiany that cause you to crave soda and ice cream...hate exercise unless it means running after animals adn to not be able to remember that is a good idea to mark eggs and calenders? Cuz i think I have that

Grace - did y'all get the coon? Don't brag about it...they have a season in OK...silly rules!

I am so jazzed. The lady next door has foster kids plus her kids. We took them out on a night hike... it was a scream. One is 17 and one is 8... we hiked 2 miles and caught lightning bugs and stared at the moon and watched a distant storm! It was a blast They are hilarious! we also took their dog Milkweed... he looks like the dog from the little rascals and is so sweet....I'm definately doing this again!!

Hi Teach I am here. My wife was home today as well and I did a lot of things I hadn't planned on.
She works tomorrow so maybe I can get some chicken work done.
I have about 40 chciks that hatched since last night and there are about six dozen to go. Naked necks and Campines are hatching like crazy. Welsummers and Marans not so much.

Sooner did you ski too much?

Glad to hear good things Monty

Henny - if you ain't careful you're gonna get a free pass to heaven doing things like that! It is neat to share stuff with kids...every onve and awhile...it makes a difference
