OK - so you're saying - the cedar shavings are fine for adult
birds and do keep "pests" down? When our chicks go to the
"real" brooders, they are on wire in a 5 section tall, factory
made brooder for about six more weeks...... Then, they go
to a pen with a 5' brooder light, but are on cedar shavings.

Have a good one !

OK Buster!!!! How do we recognize you and your brood??.

Oops. Didn't catch this till tonight. I was wearing a Berkeley t-shirt and an Atwoods hat. My nephew was a little skinny red head who was playing with several of the other kids. Wife had a blue top.

I looked around for people who looked like BYCers, but found that everyone did. Learned a lot, made a few friends, will be back next month.

Well I just got back from the Cement Auction and as usual we had a blast with Carla & Gerald, Muesky was a having her some big fun, we saw Sam and Misty and a few others I may have forgotten. prices were a little low for sellers and I thought I would take a lickin on my 35 laying hens I brought since they were almost last, but to my surprise they brought great $$ and I was happy, I even sold 15 little teen culls from my last hatch. My wife told me when she went to feed that all the remaining birds are very uncomfortable without so many of their buddies around. Just goes to show you that at least one member on this thread can truly DOWNSIZE LOL, feels good.

It would be great to connect up next month. We are just starting our journey and would love to pick some experienced brains.

Welcome to the Okies thread!! How many hens were you planning to have? And are you in the City proper or the outskirts?

I'm sure that there are some close to you that would help you out.

Well Al, I am glad you did well at the auction tonight it seemed like most birds went really "cheep" I mean cheap.

Which was good for poor folks like me. Yes I had a lot of fun. Got a bunch of peafowl eggs

, some blue & black ameraucana eggs, a blue sumantra hen (who is tres beautiful)
love.gif
, a splash sumantra rooster who looks like he has a hurt eye but is very handsome, and last but not least a wonderful showgirl roo. All in all I think I kept it to a minimum on what I bought. It was hard though there was a lot of wonderful birds I wanted to buy.

I have to keep the buy down to a minimum until I get the coop remodeled.

It is on my to do list with about 100 things that needs to get done before that.

Wish everyone could have come it was fun.

The first concern would be predator control whether it be from stray dogs, hawks, owls or any number of things that go bump in the night, or day! A coop with a covered run would be your best bet for that.

Some considerations for building a coop is expansion, hang around here and 5 will soon be 100 LOL, easy access, easy to clean and the ability to stand upright in it. I have seen converted play houses and sheds of all type used to house birds.

A well built chicken tractor is another option. They are usually light and easy to move to new grazing areas with a small enclosure build on to one end. Here is a site that will give you some good ideas on different designs of enclosures.

they aren't always bunching, they also spread out from time to time. They do have poo stuck to them, I've been using a wet shirt to clean them but it doesn't seem to work for very long. How do you fix it? No the dead birds aren't flattened the last one died while we were watching them, it was sitting in the corner and it kinda rolled over to the point where it was on its back. They have plenty of room, they're in a refridgerator box, well half of it, but it's bigger than the tupper ware bucket I had the other seven in.

Hi fellow OKIES,

I have read about a chicken auction in Maud, Ok. on Thursday nites. I wonder, is that every Thur. evening and do they have a lot of birds for sale. And, is it only chickens? Any info would be appreciated.

Also, does anyone in OK know where we could get a couple of milk goats??
