Brings up several questions.....What kind of quail? Coturnix or
Bobwhite? As with all chicks, they'll need a brooder for a while.
We do the sugar water for 12 hours and feed Game Bird
Starter Crumbies, 28% protein. You "Can Not" mix Bobwhite
Quail with chicks of any kind! They're tiny, but viscious....LOL
One of those little guys will jump straight up and rip the
nostrils out of a regular sized chick. Don't let their size fool
you....LOL

If they're Coturnix - same deal, except for them being mean..LOL
I don't know what the rest of you do with them, but we were
taught.........After about three weeks, put them in a separate
brooder and keep them in the dark until they are as big as
you want them to get...like about 8-9 ounces. By "dark" I mean...
a 7 1/2 watt red or blue bulb so they can see well enough to
eat and drink, but that will slow the "early" maturity. Then,
you'll have strong/healthy mature birds that will probably
start laying very soon.

Hope this helps. Have a good one !

Memaw, Two things I have learned about quail.
They can't have a very big waterer. A chick waterer is too big. You need to get quail waterers. I have the kind that screws onto a quart jat like a chick waterer but it is more narrow so they can't drown themselves in it
Second. They need high protein. I feed mine gamebird 28%.

These boogers grow fast!!!

Buck Guy - Oh I've been around, mostly lurking the site because I'm too busy to even sign in. *ha* But I've recently be sent on an extended vacation, with a change of scenery. Well, back to my parents, but that doesn't sound too exotic. So its just me and the duck now! And a budgie. So I'm lookin to hatch Seramas!

How's your crew been? Wow I don't guess I've talked to you since the Shawnee show, which you weren't at. How'd the knee heal up?

The knee is doing good. Stiffens up if I stay in one place too long.
Thanks for asking.
A lot of the old gang have disappeared but Grace is still around although I think she is AWOL this week, Okiechick pops in once in awhile. Carla is here alot plus a whole bunch of fine folks you probably haven't met.
I hope to go to the auction in Blanchard Saturday but I have to take things one day at a time. Hopefully it will work out. We are getting the AC replaced this week. I hope it is done before Saturday.
I caught the hatching fever this year and witht he help of a borrowed incubator Ihave hatched out around 200 chicks. Now I am paying for it.
Well I hope thing work out for you. Are you still dispatching?
Keep popping in to check on us.

Hola Okes

Hey Cammie!! Glad to see ya....sorry to hear about the change of scenery.... Hey sometimes change is good!

Yesterday one of my Pollacks got it's leg hung up in baling net on a round bale in the run. It was pretty tight around the leg and I don't know how long it had been hung up. The leg is not cut, and the toes were OK, the pad of the foot seems swollen. She seems OK....but is limping badly. I measured up all the joints against each other to look for dislocation or swelling. Seems OK...Other than the obvious, any ideas of what I should look for? I was wondering if I would just wake up one day and the foot would be black? Scary....The hen is moving around the coop and run, but gets spooked easy. Jeez, I try to think of all the silly stuff they can do to themselves and remove the hazards... missed this one.

I hope you're not planning on breeding Seramas with the duck

, it wouldn't be pretty.

You might be able to find some at one of the auctions around somewhere. Maybe one of the auctionaholics could help. Good luck on the Seramas and the 'vacaction'. BTW, I grew up SW of Chickasha.

Keben,

The only thing I know about white bbq sauce is that it is famous in Alabama.
Big Bob Gibson's white sauce is supposed to be the bomb but I haven't tried it.
No white sause has made an appearance at any of the BBQ events I have judged. I wouldn't mind trying it though.
The best sauce or glaze I have tasted at the events has been a sweet bbq sauce that had just a hint of cinnamon flavor. I have had it at two events and I like it,. I would like to know which team uses it but we never know who we have judged.
I am gonna tinker with cinnamon in some of the sauces I make this year.

Monty-Big Bob's is where the inspiration came from and I have the recipe but am going to tweek it a bit. Mexican mole sauce has mex chocolate (Abuelita is one brand) in it, which contains cinnamon. Some call mole mexican bbq so it could come from that in some variation.

Did you doctor the birds yet?

Hi Henny, how's it going today? I got your PM late yesterday but I had already posted the results. I'm probably going to make mention of the runners-up in the first post of the thread anyway so it'll still be there somewhat. It's 107 outside right now but a least the humidity is just in the 10's.

Looks like it just you and me.
