Mites in Ok. They are everywhere courtesy of the wild birds that fly over your chickens every day.

DE will minimize their numbers but if you have a really bad infestation first you might have to use a commercial spray and then the DE as a maintenence after that. Lice are more common and easily seen by the naked eye, mites are really tiny and some such as feather mites or the scaley leg mites won't be seen at all.

As far as I know neither the mites nor the lice ever have wings during any of their life stages.

That said, a healthy bird can and will usually carry a small parasite load both inside, worms, and out. Many will treat for parasites at least once yearly and sometimes twice but it depends on the ind. flock owner.

As far as the feather loss it is about time for the birds to go into a molt so they can get that beautiful winter plumage and stay warm.

If you could tell us what years the farm was active it would really help with bird selection. After all you wouldn't want Americanas as they have only been a breed since the 1970s. Wouldn't fit in to a 1800s setting.

As much diet Mt. Dew as Teach used to drink, he must have found something with more caffeine or he would be having shakes and terrible headaches.

nope...nothing new...decided the wife might be right...just doing the tea thing...gotta get a little caffine in the system. (coffee is for old people!!!)

I would bring snakes but I don't think the wife would allow it. I tried to take my baby to church last night...the boys thought it was a good idea...not to self...if boys thing it is a good idea it is probably a bad idea...

Coffee isnt for old people! Coffee is only for old people when you drink from the time that you get up to the time that you go to bed!!! lol

Tea doesn't have as much caffeine as Mt. Dew. You must be drinking a lot of it. On the other hand, if you thought it would be a good idea to take an 8 ft snake visiting, you may be dehydrated, 'cause you aren't thinking too well.

There is a kind of duck called a Buff Duck, that is probably what you have. Do a google search for that breed and see

I originally thought about those too. But my babies don't have the darker markings on their heads. The only photo that I have found that looks like them is the pic on the bottom of the feathersite page for Saxony ducks. I'm not sure if that is what they are but the photo is almost identical to them. I don't know where she ordered them from. If I did I could check their site and see what breeds they sell and maybe narrow my choices down.

Hey Jeannie!! Where'd you get them from?
