My DW's family is in the commercial chicken business with Tyson in Arkansas, they never get a chance to get away, they tell me they feel chained to those chicken houses. they raise 500,000 broilers every 7 wks and have been doing that for 30 years. Can you imagine???.

So AL, Why are you trying to raise your own meat birds? Just make a trip to Arkansas.

Everyone has to have a way to make a living and care for their family, but that sounds like a really difficult way to live.

Your right Marybeth, and they are such wonderful folks, but for them and all of their other close friends and family in the business they all think it's normal, I admire their work ethic that's for sure.

With her parents raising so many birds, your wife is obviously a wonderful person to put up with your chickens. Most people I know who grew up around commercial chicken operations don't want anything to do with chickens once they become an adult and have the opportunity to avoid chickens.

Yes and she tolerates it well, but I have learned ways to get her involved. she loves to watch chicks hatch and cares for the baby's like a well seasoned mother hen. then as they grow she get's attached to some and I keep them for her, so it seems to be working quite well.

Oh really?? I completely don't remember at all, I'm so sorry. I'm terrible with keeping everyone organized in my mind, there's only about four of us that I know.

I guess I am going to bed now. 'Date night' doesn't exist for me anymore. Lol

Good morning everyone. It has been a while since I chatted, figured I would see what everyone was up too. We had lots of fun and excitement around here last night. We have been having birds disappear for a while now, at first you couldnt tell other than a few feathers on the ground but the last couple of days we have been missing about 4 birds a day. we figured it was raccoons but didnnt know how many. Well we started out the back door to check everybody last night about 11pm and my rott took off on a dead run. Coons had walked every pen the we have trying to get in them. My dog scared them under the shed. My husband managed to shoot 2 off them, injured 1 and killed another but not before that sucker bit my dog on the nose, dang dog wasnt going to let him get away. So I'm pretty sure the other one died but my husband said he thought there was at least 4. So we will be sitting up camp at the windows for a while at night.

Hi Lynn! Hope everything is going well for you.

Coons are not all that hard to trap. Seems most have their best luck with marshmallows as bait or some other type of sweet confection. Just cover the top of the trap with a tarp leaving both ends uncovered.

Good Morning everyone! I slept in the morning, the first time in a long time. I hope it gives me the pick me up I so badly need.

For those of you that have sent me a PM, I am working on getting my in box cleaned out.

Good morning Okies,
Sooner, I slept in this morning also. I have just been so tired that it is hard to accomplish anything other than the "have to do" things like feeding critters.
It is nice outside this morning so I think I will go pull some weeds and plant some turnips and beans.

Al - I like the way you keep your better half involved with the chickens by tapping into her motherly instincts.
